There was some contamination in the top songs playlist because my account is connected to the Google speakers in our house, but this seems pretty accurate:

Top 5 Artists:
1. The Barr Brothers (binged them hard in January and February)
2. Pearl Jam ( :heartbeat: )
3. John R. Miller
4. Manchester Orchestra
5. The War on Drugs

Top 5 Songs:
Not Dead Yet (Lord Huron)
Faustina (John R. Miller)
Bed Head (Manchester Orchestra)
Keel Timing (Manchester Orchestra)
Lookin' Over My Shoulder (John R. Miller)

Moods:
Cozy and Free-Spirited

Genre:
Alternative Country

ROBBED:
Buck Meek and Hiss Golden Messenger, who I mostly listen to through the Bandcamp app.

I was just thinking about those Spotify statistics the other day and what they really measure and are capable to capture. I guess, at least for me personally what I get out of music is first and foremost the feeling it gives me. Many songs also remind me of a particular moment in my life and people connected to those situations. Arvo Pärt's Fratres still takes me back to that moment when I heard that my friend had died (I was listening to that song when I got the news). Tom Waits' I Can't Wait To Get Off Work takes me back to that summer when I had discovered Small Change and did a three-shift work in factory. Music has also always been something that comforts me when life kicks me in the head.

So when I put on a song I don't think what genre it belongs to, how many minutes and seconds it lasts or how many times I have listened to that particular song that day/week/month/year. Those numbers really say nothing meaningful about my listening experience and what music really means to me. Instead, those numbers basically strip away everything that's important to me in music, and make listening to music a competition where the winner is the one with the biggest numbers.

In the end it's just a clever way to dupe Spotify users into doing free marketing for them. And it works!

I can't wait until it's physically possible for streaming platforms to provide aggregate data reports on emotional responses

I'm totally on the opposite side of the fence from contamination. For me, listening to music is only about the hard numbers

I didn't enjoy that article even though I feel I agree with most of it.

I mean they're right

But also... no shit. Seems pretty obvious that it "says nothing about the joy of music." How could it? And does the author think people share their Wrapped results because they think it's a meaningful summary of their relationship with the artform?
