I just saw a recent press photo of Bad Religion and there are 6 people in the band. 6!

I woulda guessed 3 …. maaaaaybe 4. And honestly they could probably even do what they do with 2.

To be fair the sixth member -- original lead guitarist Brett Gurewitz -- doesn't tour with them at all. He rejoined the band in the early 2000s after a long period away but because of his commitments running the record label Epitaph he only contributes to writing/recording albums and the odd hometown show

Usually it's just 5, a pretty standard two-guitar punk band setup

I'm often looking for calming, relaxing, serene music to have on in the background that isn't distracting but calms my anxiety, racing thoughts, or whatever other mental health nonsense is going on

and it's not a new thought, but it occurred to me again the other day that a lot of music *sold* as "relaxing", "calming" and "meditative" is also deeply sad, and puts my mind into some unpleasant emotional memory places

and so I thought, what if someone went out of their way to create music that addressed that problem? what if they created music that was not distractingly "upbeat" but was still uplifting in good ways? what would that sound like, and has anyone ever truly achieved it?

part of the problem is that emotional spaces, and the triggers that cause us to return to them, are completely subjective; I might be having a crying fit to a piece of music that someone else is dancing to, or vice versa

and yet, still, I find it generally true that "calming" and "sad" are often bedfellows

what gives?

I don't disagree with this and also wish there was more music that fit in this bucket. However, I will say that Thelonious Monk's solo piano records are precisely this for me. If you have a taste for jazz at all, highly recommended. (A few titles are Thelonious Himself, Thelonious Alone in San Francisco, and Solo Monk -- very expository, no-nonsense titles in those days)
