Being John Malkovich

Possibly my favorite movie.

It's probably number 2 behind Adaptation on my Charlie Kaufman list, but both are among my all-time favorites.

Finished The Power of the Dog. On to Annette.

How was it?

I loved it. Beautiful scenery, great performances. Nice slow burning plot with a few twists and surprises. I saw a bunch of headlines like "The Ending EXPLAINED" before watching it, so I was maybe expecting something a bit more ambiguous at the end. But the ending was perfect.

One thing that confused me:

I swear in the scene where George has his parents and the governor over for dinner, the governor makes an offhand comment like, "George, your brother, first in his class at Harvard..." Did I mishear that? Was he talking about Peter, Rose's son?

No he was talking about Phil (I think it was Yale?). I thought that was one of the best tensions in the movie-- George wants to be the society man, educated, cultured etc, but he failed out of college and had to come back to the ranch, while Phil went Ivy League but chooses this life.

I also did not think the ending was ambiguous at all, pretty clear what happened. It was just a degree off of being great for me, a little too convenient in the run up to the final sequence. But excellent filmmaking

Wow, I remember the line about about George failing out of college, but the Phil/Yale thing didn't land for me at all. Interesting.

Tick Tick Boom. I did not like that! What's more, Jonathan Larson -- whom I went 34 years of my life having absolutely no opinion about -- is now my eternal nemesis. I must now spend the remainder of my days desecrating his memory!

Andrew Garfield is very charming, but he and I seem to have very different taste in movies. I wish that he would choose different roles. I couldn't get more than ten minutes into that Tammy Faye movie and I watched but didn't enjoy tick tick boom.

Another movie I didn't really like was The Power of the Dog. It was OK. I was interested in the beginning, it lost me for a while, and the ending was good. Beautiful landscapes. I don't think she's quite given enough to chew on in this movie, but Kirsten Dunst is good. I'm not sure why Benedict Cumberbatch is being given plaudits for a great performance, though. It's nothing special, with an occasional distractingly bad line reading here and there

I wouldn't say it's worth sticking it out for The Eyes of Tammy Faye--it's still just an okay movie--but the difference between the first 20 minutes (truly, nauseatingly awful) and the final hour (pretty good!) was astonishing, and Jessica Chastain is phenomenal once they kind of clear the space for her.

As for Tick Tick Boom, I can just say that the Lin-Manuel Miranda directed musical about how stressful it is not to be a big success before your 30th birthday is gonna be a resolute nope for me.
