This is pretty good but I'd prob have Hard Days Night at 3 or 4 and move everyone else down one. Love that album.liebzz wrote:1. Abbey RoadThurman Murman wrote:I'm probably going to disagree with this 5 minutes from now but here goes...

I’ve made lists like this a ton of times, and they always seem to change, with the exception of my number one spot. Revolver will always be my favorite.

Re: And We Are All Together / The Beatles Thread
After number one, this'll be pretty murky.
The White Album
Revolver
Help
Sgt. Pepper's
Rubber Soul
Let it Be
Abbey Road
With The Beatles
Beatles For Sale
A Hard Day's Night
Please Please Me
At least in the last half of the career, the band's albums are a bit more singular, but I find ranking the first four in some kind of order particularly impossible.

At least in the last half of the career, the band's albums are a bit more singular, but I find ranking the first four in some kind of order particularly impossible.
1) Please Please Me - this was recorded in a day, and it has the immediacy and rawness that comes with the group just throwing it all out on the table. The best of the bunch for me.
2) With the Beatles - still really good, but I don’t think it’s quite the fire the first album is.
3) A Hard Days Night - this is the Beatles mastering the pop format that they’ve taken over the world with. Really the last great album of them as kids riding a wave of breezy pop genius.
4) Beatles For Sale - it’s the Beatles, it’s still good, but it feels on this album like they want to turn the corner but they haven’t quite figured out how. It’s the only album of theirs I think I ever feel like is a drag creatively. There are plenty of good songs but I am always drawn to the energy that precedes it or the more refined writing and craftsmanship that follows it (Help!).

Re: And We Are All Together / The Beatles Thread
Looking back, yes, I don't think I could put Please Please me last. But it's difficult, as while Beatles for Sale stumbles at points, it also has my favorite opening three-track salvo from the first part of their career. After watching the documentary, I'm actually going back through their discography while reading The Complete Recording Sessions. You know it just from the quantity of releases, but seeing their productivity and progression on a day-by-day and session-by-session basis is pretty astounding.

Re: And We Are All Together / The Beatles Thread
What is it about George that put him down in the ranks for you in part one? I thought the events leading up to the climax painted him with a likeable brush, though I can definitely see how he could come across as unlikeable to others.Jorge wrote:Finally finished Part 1. Ringo is now my favorite Beatle and George my least-favorite
Having watched the conflict with Paul play out on film, I have a new perspective on that dynamic. Reading about sessions over the years, I always thought of George as a firebrand to Paul's dominating leader role. Here, he seems much more passive and earnest about his songs. He just wants to play them and share them with the boys. Until he doesn't anymore. Something about that is very relatable and likeable to me, so I'm curious to read another take on that dynamic.
Ringo's great, and the way part 2 started with him walking in the studio all alone was so endearing.

Glad to see John come out of his coma for just a little bit in part two (only 30 mins in so far...) His bit with the group where he won't stop speaking in old beatles lyrics had me laughing out loud. Just the best sense of humor.

Re: And We Are All Together / The Beatles Thread
Those moments in this when Paul and John are goofing around are just the best.
I love all four of these guys. I think in this documentary at least, George is the "coolest" in my book. Ringo gave me the most laughs though. In part 3 when some of them are trying to have a serious discussion and Ringo just blurts out "I've farted".
Also, that receptionist at the studio in part three needs more recognition for the work she did stalling the police.

Is it possible to like both Paul and George equally the most after watching part one of this thing? Somehow, I've found a way.

Of course not, you dolt. People have been trying for almost 60 years now. And all of a sudden YOU come along and proclaim you’ve solved this problem. No sir. We’re not having any of this rubbish.washing machine wrote:Is it possible to like both Paul and George equally the most after watching part one of this thing? Somehow, I've found a way.

Re: And We Are All Together / The Beatles Thread
Has anybody come up with, or come across, a really good "lost" Beatles album? The idea being that you'd take from the solo projects of 1970/71 and make a mix based on the supposed proposal that George and John made to Paul that the next album (or moving forward) should be an equal song share of 3-4 for each with maybe 1-2 for Ringo?
Started this one last night but struggling to put it together...
John songs - Instant Karma!, Jealous Guy, God, ?
George songs - What Is Life, Isn't It A Pity, All Things Must Pass, My Sweet Lord
Paul songs - Another Day, Maybe I'm Amazed, ?? I'd love to include Too Many People but probably doesn't make sense if you're working on the assumption that they didnt break up...
Ring songs - ??
