Was still an interesting film to watch, but somehow not very enjoyable. Story just too rough.

Haven't watched Requiem since shortly after it came out but I think Last Exit to Brooklyn, also written by Selby Jr., was the first (and last) book I ever put down mid-read as it really just kind of hit me.Anders wrote:Was still an interesting film to watch, but somehow not very enjoyable. Finished The Last Duel. I thought it was great, a little on the nose at times but overall really well done.

Re: What movies are you watching?
In this case, the movie presents itself as a meditation on contemporary rape culture and #metoo, which is really interesting and I think Scott does a great job of using the Rashomon structure to explore this, but there are a few scenes where it feels like we're not in the world of the movie but in the director's head telling us what to think about the world of the movie. I'm thinking particularly of the encounter in the church between Marguerite and her mother-in-law. I don't think that scene, or at least the way it played out, was necessary to make the social point Scott's making, and it took me out of the immersive experience.

that scene was weird in the context of history, i cant imagine that talk being something that could happen around those times but for me, it worked as a way of humanize more her mother in law.

Re: What movies are you watching?
Okay I read some posts about The Last Duel and I'm convinced that society is illiterate, even in images, and Ridley Scott is 100% correct about millennials.

Re: What movies are you watching?
the movie seemed preachy as hell in the marketing, that's why no one went to see it. The message of the movie, according to the trailers, was that rape is bad. And, look, on a scale of rapey to not-rapey, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are both decidedly somewhere in the middle of that spectrum. Not rapey but not not-rapey, ya know? Who wants to see a movie where a blond Ben Affleck tells us not to rape? Predictably, no one
