Did we adequately discuss Born to Run? Also, Damn the Torpedoes, Rubber Soul…

Agreed that Led Zeppelin IV is. It’s almost too perfect in the way that makes you want to be contrarian and say another one is better.

Even if the songs were all great this is the worst sounding commercially released piece of music of all time

I’m no rhcp expert, but Blood Sugar Sex Magik is perfect, and also much better than Californication.

This is truth. Actually Blood Sugar Sex Magik and Mother’s Milk are both close.

tragabigzanda wrote:Californication sounds great. It’s super compressed, recorded very hot, and has a very narrow (almost mono but not quite) stereo spread. It works for the music really well
It sounds like cardboard in the worst way

I am in the minority who think By the Way is their one perfect album.

I've always loved Californication and didn't even think about the poor compression/sound quality until it was brought to my attention in recent years. Now I can definitely hear it and agree that it sucks. I still love the songs though.

I read somewhere that Californication is the album that started the loudness war. Any truth to that?

I think it had been going on for a while, but Californication was the point where it became really noticeable to the general public -- a lot of people going "hold on a second, this sounds like ass!" and looking into it
