They used to get it, but straights and edges don't sell as well.

This is six! I love Kiarostami but I couldn't get through Certified Copy when I tried it earlier this year. Maybe I wasn't in the right mood, I should go back to it.

Started watching Spencer last night but didn't finish it, so that will probably be my first movie of 2022.

Funny that you posted this one; the movie it most reminded me of on a visual level was Tarzan

I take your point about the homogeneity of the character designs. I'm not gonna go to bat for the Disney house style but the textures and colors and composition in Encanto are really well done, and they found ways to use them as expressive tools that struck me as unusual for this type of movie

I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

Again, not gonna go to bat for Disney Animation as a whole, but it's crazy to me that anyone would watch this movie and some of the things they do visually and come away thinking "meh, same old."

The fact that one of the characters' whole arc is about discovering the value in asymmetry, sharp angles and prickliness adds a nice level of meta to this conversation

Lotta adult men talking about children's movies here, and only some of them have children.

There are some subtle stylistic differences in most hand drawn Disney animated movies, but there seems to be two competing views that show up again and again: One that played straights and curves off each other (and wasn't afraid of other techniques), and one that was just "make everything as round and squishy as possible." It seemed that the first won out for the most part in the later hand drawn movies, but they were becoming very formulaic.

With the modern Disney CG movies, it's like they are mandated to make everything as soft as possible. It's weird. It seems that the other studios aren't afraid to mix it up, but Disney went to one extreme end. There is no technique to it. It's Kinkade shit.

But the actual animation (movement) is fantastic, no doubt.

Pixar seems like its going that way more and more, too. I had some problems with their style, but they are least mixed it up.

Movies? The artform that reaches the most people and affects people the most powerfully, especially the young? Why would I care about that?

I suspect she was a monstrously negligent parent. The kids probably watched nothing but Disney movies.

What is this facial expression? What is it supposed to convey? It's kind of nervous and unthreatening, yet smug...I don't even know. But I want to punch him in his stupid fat face. Sometimes I catch myself making this face in a reflection, and I want to punch myself in the face, too.

Why do I see this facial expression on so many animated characters? It's like their default expression. I hate this!
