I guess this is true and works better when you include Babe I’m Gonna Leave You.Captain Termite wrote:Is Good Times Bad Times the first Zeppelin song for this purpose? It was track 1 and I think their first single. I guess it only distilled the heavy half of their "whole deal," so not the best example.

nah, Yellow was a low-key little indie song with very simple production, FAR less flashy and showy than what they do nowdad wrote:Coldplay - Yellow

But in another way, "Yellow" defines their whole deal because it sucks and their whole deal is sucking

Re: Bands where the very first song defines their whole deal
well, that's not very nice.
i think Yellow defines them and their sound and style because it's just a pop song. it's not like they're playing hard-charging rock songs.
when i think of coldplay, i think of catchy, sad boy pop songs.

I think I misinterpreted the premise of this thread as being “name an artist who’s entire catalogue could be replaced by their first song”

Re: Bands where the very first song defines their whole deal
Funnily enough, ACDCs first single was the poppy "Can I Sit Next to You Girl" with Dave Evans on lead vocals. It is an absolute outlier in their catalogue and on no way sounds like the "classic" ACDC standard riffage and metronomic rhythm guitar sound that we all love so much.Bammer wrote:Farmer John wrote:What's AC/DC's first song?
