Yeah SW is really good. It's got the most Ed pronunciation problems, though.

I kind of think this is true. It's what's turned me onto the song more and more.Lostdog wrote:it's an incredible solo, one of the best in a long time.

Stone should have taken that solo....
Swallowed hole is an upbeat folky tune and stone has a much more systematic approach to such a tune that would be more fitting. Mike does his usual wankery (which I love!) but I think stone brings a whole new element to it and it would have been perfect for this. tight and concise.
Do you listen to Neil at all?
Mike is a blues wanker and it works for most PJ songs but when stone takes over it adds an entirely new element. Mike's approach is tried and true but can get very stale quickly.
Listen to All Those Yesterdays or any live version of their "Fuckin Up". Stone is just as visceral but at the same time he seems to approach it at a much different level than mike. on the surface it sems calculated but then you realize stone is just as an emotional player as mike but he doesnt have the same speed and dexterity as mike. So, the notes he hits seem to hit just hit at the last possible moment of what you would expect....
Listen to "Fuckin up " from Chicago 2009 and you can hear how the song is elevated to a different level than what mike brings with his wankery.
Stone would have been perfect for swallowed whole.

It has held on to my vote as the best so far. Sirens and Getaway are strong, though. So is Lightning Bolt.Juvenal wrote:The song really soars. I can't wait to hear a CD quality version.Vindicator wrote:Swallowed Whole kind of hit me today. The beginning starts off slow, and I don't particularly like Ed's vocals in the beginning , but the bridge into the solo, the final verse, the chorus. It all turns into something beautiful and great, I'd love to see a fan made video for it. So much imagery in the song.
Damn, i wish a real copy of this thing would leak already. 10/14 seems a long way off, and I'm gong to both shows in Worcester, traveling and such. Not a lot of time to immerse myself in it...

A good stone solo just feels like Pearl Jam. Most stone solo songs sound unique to them. Not For You, for example. Is there are more distinctive pearl jam song?Dr. Van Nostrand wrote:I like a lot of mikes solos, but i love every one of stones soloshlniv wrote:I'm glad this thread hasn't completely gone to shitStrat wrote:harmless wrote:You might be right, I'm not sure I know enough about their guitar styles except that Mike is a Hendrix worshipper. Re: Lightning Bolt - October 15
While listening to the new 8 songs (6 lb and 2 ST demos) I realized that my favorite band is very good. Something isn't there though. I think all pearl jam has a point, and nearly every song is good or has its place.
There is great Pearl Jam though. The difference between the great Pearl Jam songs and the Pearl Jam songs that exist is what they are in response to. The great songs are in response to specific people or situations. The good songs/songs with a place are in response to ideas in broader terms, still well written but not the same.
The song Lightning Bolt represents this perfectly. A very well written song that has depth and is catchy. It is easily relatable on multiple levels. But, to me, it's missing that quality that songs like Alive, Black, RVM, Not For You, In My Tree, Jeremy, Porch, Betterman, etc have. The only song I could think of that is about a broad idea that is GREAT is Do the Evolution

So that station in typical Pj fashion had a big build up to an announcement.. Of an announcement. Trip for two to Seattle to see the final show in December. Contest stars next Monday.
