I'm very nearly done. I will justify my tardiness at a much later date.

Yeah, so having hopped on Soundcloud to upload that, I notice that I've had a lot of listens this month. Looking further, one person in particular seems to have spun quite a few tracks. So I click on the screen name, and...

It's pretty funny that the two people who have shown the least amount of interest in this contest are in the finals. When this ends in June can we do an original song contest?

I have no musical ability, no recording equipment, and no idea how to write a song. BUT I would LOVE to listen to other folks' originals. I'd be down with voting in an original song tourney.

There just aren't enough musicians on this board to properly run cover contests. Unfortunately, maybe 10 people give a shit.
I might be able to get to an E-bow.

Re: Other Bands Cover Contest: Finals coming soon!
Attendance for this kind of thing is extremely variable on musician boards, too. Even if you're an amateur musician, at the end of the day you don't want to listen to music that doesn't elicit some level of response other than "that was a pretty good sound he got on that guitar" or "that stylistic change was unexpected. Neat idea, decent execution."
With originals, it's a little easier for people to let themselves get drawn in because there tends to be an assumption of emotional honesty that doesn't always exist with a cover of someone else's song. I think a lot of the time we, as amateurs, tend to focus so much energy on trying to do better at the technical end (performance wise, primarily, but also sometimes production) that we lose the "sell"....we step outside the song and end up performing the dumb thing rather than getting lost inside it. Pearl Jam's Love Reign O'er Me was big on sell...so was Johnny Cash's If You Could Read My Mind. One of these songs is a lot more technically difficult than the other, but they both came out lived in and believed in....and that's what makes them powerful. Technical tiptoeing often makes for a track that is easy to appreciate or be impressed by...but also easy to get bored by or to forget. And, after the initial spike in curiosity, it makes it hard to maintain interest in an ongoing contest on a week-to-week basis. Unfortunately, as we ARE amateurs, a degree of technical care and balance is often needed to avoid an embarrassing or unlistenable mess.
With originals, even if the performance isn't selling, I have the knowledge that this is your work. These are YOUR words, YOUR melodies....it is, in a fashion, some small piece of you that is being shared. So even if you end up trying so hard to maximize your performance on a technical level that the feeling of the song gets tempered, that assumption of authenticity is still at the core of my listening experience.
Also, where the fuck is Kevin.

If we just call this over and winnerless, can we entertain the idea of an originals contest now?

Re: Other Bands Cover Contest: Finals coming soon!
KD has no internet and won't for a few more weeks, which was the delay. I want to have at least one final match, but we can start prepping for an originals while we wait.

Edit: just realised it's a cover, ha. But still, good job!
I'd be up for an Original songs contest some point soon. I have a few new tracks recorded since the last one.

Re: Other Bands Cover Contest: Finals coming soon!
a bit late, but congrats Mcp. I'm a big fan of yours...so no big deal losing to you. I got a new job with the railroad a few months ago. Have been training on the road for a couple months. I'm only home every other day, and that time is barely enough to sleep. Looking forward to the finals.
