Watched the actual SNL performances last night. Watching the special now on DVR and this album is going to be incredible.

Re: Arcade Fire
If this is indeed their best album to date then they will effectively cement themelves as the best band of the past decade, IMO.

Even without this album, I think they've achieved that mantle.Soma. wrote:If this is indeed their best album to date then they will effectively cement themelves as the best band of the past decade, IMO.

Re: Arcade Fire
Reflektor 3/5 (I like the studio track a lot, but it didn't work too well for me on SNL, bad sound or not)
Afterlife 2.5/5 (bad sound as well, but I found the song fairly dull/uneventful regardless. hopefully my mind changes on record)
Here Comes The Night Time 4.5/5 (first part is a little dull, but that fast bridge kills)
We Exist 4/5 (not amazing, but a solid mid tempo number. the main synth + bass line is pretty killer)
Normal Person 5/5 (by far the best song we've heard from the album and the one that gives me hope still)
That said... I thought they looked/acted way more "goofy" than usual during the SNL performances. They almost seemed to be trying way too hard... The special was a lot better at least in that regard. I actually didn't mind the celeb cameos too much.
i'm actually a little uneasy about hearing the album now after those tunes on SNL... not that they were bad by any means... just seemed very cluttered/messy at times.

Re: Arcade Fire
based on the 5 songs we've heard, the other songs would all have to be STUPIDLY good for this to be their best record for me.
hell, i'm gonna be surprised if it even cracks my top 5 on the year (which says more about 2013 than anything)

"Normal Person" is certainly no "Sirens".

We Exist
Normal Person
These were the standout songs. The SNL performances were kinda dull, actually. But, I still really like the studio version of Reflektor, so maybe its just these electronica songs won't be as impactful, live?

Re: Arcade Fire
The problem with Reflektor (or most electronic / disco stuff) is that it gets into a hypnotic groove and stays there for 8 minutes. Bands who do that kind of thing have to compensate by making their live show exciting in ways peripheral to the actual playing of instruments. And I'm not sure if Arcade Fire need more practise at that. Doesn't mean the actual songs aren't strong in themselves, and won't hold your attention on the record.

That's my feeling too. But, Winn didn't sound particularly great either - like really rusty.harmless wrote:The problem with Reflektor (or most electronic / disco stuff) is that it gets into a hypnotic groove and stays there for 8 minutes.
