So this happened, huh? People are still telling fully-grown adults that they can't have a negative opinion on anything Pearl Jam does? I'd like to remind everyone that PJ are also fully-grown adults, getting handsomely paid for what they do. They don't need Internet white knights sticking up for them. They do what they want to do, and their fans will have opinions on the products they release. Well, the ones still allowed to utilise independent thinking will. It's fine. Live and let live.

Is there anyone on any post saying u can't have an opinion on the band? Some people just have different opinions. Live and let live? Someone who posts 12000 mainly negative posts on a board about the fricking thing the board is about does have much of a life to live. And if anyone doesn't accept peoples opinions it's you. Its not a conversation man, you're on each topic running the music down. If you went off the band after Riot Act or whatever, some people came onto this board recently to get buzzed about a new album which doesnt happen so often. The stalwarts on this board are like 'oh, we have to put up with fans... this place is about communication and democracy...we're the RM...' Its not, really its not... this is for fans. You want to check my postcount; I wouldn't have got to 10,000 posts before anyone else if all I posted was negative. Seriously. This are a couple of quotes from the Italian RS interview with Stone

regarding songwriting/in response why it took them so much time to resume "spreading their blessing"

Each of us brings in a package of demos. We go in the studio, mostly without Eddie, and we start to improvise together on those demos. We end up with a Cd with 14 to 15 tracks that we give to Eddie. The we go back in the studio and redo everything 2 to 3 times. At the end of all this we play the songs for Brendan. The songs take shape in this way, like a dialogue, then without realising it we're in LA recording the definitive versions. This time it took as longer.

Than he specifies the process does change from song to song :

Sometimes the lyrics come 1st. I like this method because the lyrics can push the arrangements in directions that are completely new, making you do things you wouldn't normally do. Mostly what comes 1st is the music, the melody, that while it takes shape brings the lyrics along.

about touring/family

You miss your family a lot on tour. Being away from a 6 year old daughter seems like forever. When i can i take her with me.

Ours is a spacial case. We can choose, and we do, to do only 3 week per leg long tours. We try not to overdo it: It's only rock and roll, the safety of the universe is not in question here. It's more important to take care of ourselves. This is probably why the band lasts as long, because we're still having fun.

On continuing with the band in the future/about keeping the band together as old men with gray hair like the Rolling Stones and others

I don't see why we should stop touring at 60. Maybe at some point we'll say : "Ok, this was nice, but that's it!" As of now we have no intention to.

Oh the introduction to the interview reads something like this:

Yes, i will try and translate this one as well. After cleaning the cat litter boxes and planting some lavendula, cooking, washing, dinner, and the Breaking Bad final. When I read it, I thought: okay, if this gets translated this was Bo'B's last album with the band. But it's only a small article, and not well written. It mentions Stone in a sentence where you would expect to see Mike mentioned, for instance.

I think Brendan said that Ed used to say that when he got annoyed. I'm not sure he's said it recently, but it would be interesting if he had. I hate to say it but it's encouraging that they might go somewhere else for the next record.

Great points. This dynamic being discussed here is the essence of what makes Pearl Jam interesting to me. PJ is the band, from the very very beginning, who have sort of walked the tightrope between the old uncompromising indie rock world and the completely compromising schlock rock world.

If I wanted a band that completely disregarded pop and mainstream sensibilities, I would have just gotten into Sonic Youth. You want interesting, layered, experimental, left turns, no care in the world about how that relates to the "commercial" world? Sonic Youth is your band. I don't know why you'd evr bother with Pearl Jam. But SY never appealed to me because it always struck me as a "preach to the choir" band. PJ is the band that reaches out and grabs you, and while you're hooked in, you get some important statements.

The good thing about music and bands is that you can have both Pearl Jam and Sonic Youth to be a fan of. One does not exclude the other . Personal choice. I recall not liking Sonic Youth the first time I saw them. That changed into really liking them in the years that followed. People can change, and taste can be developed as well. I still love the same styles I loved as a toddler, but the list of great songs only expanded from then on.

So how far out from the release date did Backspacer leak? Did it happen during the day, overnight...? How does this stuff tend to go down? (I ask that realizing there aren't really any rules for this per se)

It always leaks when you are asleep, or at work, or just that one time you leave the house for a while without a mobile phone or something . I recall times when I got the album on tape before it was released, and then made copies for friends on other tapes, unless I had promised not to share yet .
