Favorite book this year so far; read 100 pages in a day (approx., since it's like 25% on Kindle), which never happens anymore.

Sorry, this one is actually old, it's just my favorite I've read this year so far. Opened the year with a disappointment (Station 11), a clunker (The Calcutta Chromosome), and a fun little diversion (Night Train). Lush Life is the first one I've picked up that I haven't been able to put down.

Man, Station Eleven is so much better than Lush Life. And I goddamn love Lush Life.

I still haven't been able to nail down what I was looking for in Station Eleven that it didn't deliver on. I was much more interested in the older characters who were already aged in the "old world" than I was in the youngsters, so those parts--like Clark's and Jeevan's--were my favorites.

Lush Life, the way the dialogue brings the world to life is my favorite part so far. Every character has a unique voice. I also just started rewatching Homicide, which it reminds me a lot of. So it hit at just the right time.

Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

Gotcha. I didn't know who he was until one of the folks in my writer's group told me that one is my pieces was similar to Price. They thought I'd really like his stuff and recommended Lush Life.

I've been slowly plodding through this one as back-up bedtime reading for a few months now. It's really interesting but man does he get into the weeds a bit.
