I don't think one need look any further than Nude/Big Ideas to see evidence of a tendency to overthink things within the band.
But overthinking isn't really the issue. It's confinement. It's stubbornness.

that's probably how those handclaps ended up in Lotus Flowertragabigzanda wrote:I feel this is a little too cynical. It’s got to be hard to be in a band with that many people. So my options are to turn some knobs, or maybe sit this one out and check the football scores?”epilogue wrote:I don't think one need look any further than Nude/Big Ideas to see evidence of a tendency to overthink things within the band.

I don't know. I've never been in a band. But was it that difficult for three albums? I feel like the stuff you're pointing out speaks to my criticism of the midterm day Radiohead. Which again is not to say that a band should stagnate.tragabigzanda wrote:I feel this is a little too cynical. It’s got to be hard to be in a band with that many people. Yorke should have a side project with every band member so they can all get a chance to shine and not have to find their places in between the beep bops

Wait …you consider mid period Radiohead everything before kid a?tragabigzanda wrote:Well I don’t think the lush production is a bad thing, or even inherently limiting; I just think that some energy can get lost the more stuff gets piled on, so they gravitate towards certain sounds that allow lots of cooks in the kitchen.epilogue wrote:I don't know. If I had one gripe about mid-period Radiohead, it would be their reliance on big crescendos. From Kid A onward, they seemed to get over the idea that every song had to have a low point and a high point, and could simply exist as static mood pieces.
And that’s what I’m getting with The Smile, too. It’s just that by virtue of having less instruments, the mood can be a bit more driving and less ethereal.
Or something like that.

Certainly but that ain’t middle period Radiohead !tragabigzanda wrote:Call it what you want, but The Bends - HTTF was — in retrospect — very formulaic. And I goddamn love The Bends.
All that stuff was early Radiohead. A completely different band emerged for kid a - their middle period.
