by the way, that reminded me of a story. when my son was in junior soccer about 7 years ago, my wife secretly promised to pay him $5 if, during one of his games when i yelled something at him, he yelled out so everyone on the sidelines could hear: "YOU'RE NOT MY REAL DAD." he did. half the parents who knew me laughed. the other half gasped.

i would’ve yelled back something about adoption being an arduous process.

i almost yelled out "that's pretty obvious, considering how you're playing!"

I feel this is a little too cynical. It’s got to be hard to be in a band with that many people. Imagine being Johnny sometimes: “Thom’s singing and playing guitar, Colin’s got this great bass groove going, we have two drummers at the moment, and Ed’s guitar is soaked in reverb and filling everything out. So my options are to turn some knobs, or maybe sit this one out and check the football scores?”

I don't know. I've never been in a band. But was it that difficult for three albums? I feel like the stuff you're pointing out speaks to my criticism of the midterm day Radiohead. Which again is not to say that a band should stagnate.

Well I don’t think the lush production is a bad thing, or even inherently limiting; I just think that some energy can get lost the more stuff gets piled on, so they gravitate towards certain sounds that allow lots of cooks in the kitchen.

If I had one gripe about mid-period Radiohead, it would be their reliance on big crescendos. From Kid A onward, they seemed to get over the idea that every song had to have a low point and a high point, and could simply exist as static mood pieces.

And that’s what I’m getting with The Smile, too. It’s just that by virtue of having less instruments, the mood can be a bit more driving and less ethereal.

Or something like that.

Call it what you want, but The Bends - HTTF was — in retrospect — very formulaic. And I goddamn love The Bends.

All that stuff was early Radiohead. A completely different band emerged for kid a - their middle period.
