Rogan?

Post by Rob »

Whoops didn't mean to start a thread, started deleting it, but here we are...

Would be interesting to see a poll here - Being a Joe Rogan fan makes you think less of someone Y/N.

I've listened to the guy a few times if someone tells me about (or I read about) an interesting guest. He's interesting, and clearly popular. He isn't PC, but if you think this is the enemy, man...

I don't think he's the enemy (it was smart for Bernie to go on his show) but what he and his show represent is more complex (and in certain ways more insidious) than simply being "not PC."

Giving Rob his poll. Maybe belongs elsewhere, but we can merge later.
Everything's perfectly all right now. We're fine. We're all fine here, now, thank you. How are you?

But if I said I loved Joe Rogan, would you think less of me?

Haven't listened to him in the longest time, but he's had some interesting people on. He knows his stuff when it comes to Jiu-jitsu, fighting, hunting and some diet stuff. The rest of the stuff he tends to just flip-flop and agree with whichever guest is there

Dude actually has no interesting take on anything. He was able to get good guests and get them talking....by letting them get stoned out of their mind or drunk....? I dont know. He was fine when he has entertainers on because it was just bro's talking about bro stuff....

Beyond that? Dude seriously doesnt have an interesting/thoughtful take on anything.

Gwyneth Paltrow for white dudes.

And ive felt this way about the guy well before this whole recent drama. I used to enjoy watching him on youtube depending on the guest but.....

The question here, though, is how you treat someone who likes him.

It would make me wonder what you're getting from his show. My FIL and BIL listen to him extensively and are always trying to pass along episodes. I find it pretty dull and interminable, even when the guest is not a grade-A dipshit like Jordan Peterson or a malicious actor like Alex Jones. Strat and Rangi have their fingers on how I see it: Rogan is, to his credit, curious, but he's a curious moron, so he's not a particularly good interviewer and he's not at all self-reflective about any of his ideas, doesn't have any intellectual consistency, etc. I've never heard a Joe Rogan episode where it wouldn't be improved with a different host. Maybe the jiu-jitsu ones are the exception, but I don't care about jiu-jitsu.

I know the Rob account to be pretty thoughtful and measured, so like I said, if you were like "Hey I love Joe Rogan," it would make me wonder how that fits in to this larger picture. Is there something I'm missing about the show? Do you have some additional attachment to the guy that explains this? But if I met you on the street and you were like "hello, I am Rob, the first thing you should know about me is that I like Joe Rogan" I don't think I would pursue a friendship with you. Not every Rogan listener is a dipshit but Rogan devotees are absolutely not to be trusted or valued. This probably goes for basically any podcast--Chapo superfans are lunatics too--but Rogan definitely brings out the idiots.

For the record, I am not a Rogan "fan" by any means. I agree with the video B posted somewhere of Jon Stewart saying we engage someone like Rogan, and reserve these feelings for the real crazies. All due respect to the great Neil Young, but I don't think this is the right way, and don't think Rogan is crazy enough to warrant this position.

Like you, I have family members who love the guy. It's not the first thing they'd say to you (I agree that's a red flag), but they think he's awesome. For example both of my brothers like him. One of them is kind of an idiot and drives us crazy because he's 41 and only seems to know basic right wing talking points. The other is one of the smartest people I've ever known, pretty liberal, and like me just doesn't really see why this guy is a target (except for the large audience).

The last time I watched Joe Rogan was whenever I fired up my Chappelle’s Show DVD and the fear factor skit.

Never heard his radio or podcast.
