you know what? I wish this band (solo singer, whatever) was just "fine", consistently average; instead of just releasing albums full of songs I kinda like, they release albums full of songs I could potentially like a lot... and then one or two absolute turds

I listened to the gig straight through and thought in many ways they played better than Pearl Jam; the songs we know sounded better live, and the live versions of the other Earthling songs whet my appetite for the album; I never feel that about live Pearl Jam anymore

I listened to the gig straight through and thought in many ways they played better than Pearl Jam; the songs we know sounded better live, and the live versions of the other Earthling songs whet my appetite for the album; I never feel that about live Pearl Jam anymore

Haven’t heard it yet, but I will say I always thought there was a certain energy to audience recordings that I always loved. The difference also is that an audience recording like an impressionist painting, forces your mind to fill in the picture versus a professional live recording, which leaves nothing to the imagination. I am not saying the Earthlings aren’t better than Pearl Jam live because I haven’t really heard them, but I am suggesting that some of the difference you are hearing could have something to do with that?

This was leaked on archive(dot)org today. Family member listened to the full album there today. Unfortunately, he had no idea it wasn't released yet and just told me about it tonight. Sadly I didn't get a chance to listen before link was down. But it is out there. No idea how to find it now.

not really, I just think this band are tight and well-rehearsed, and however much I dislike RHCP, Chad Smith is a better drummer than Matt and understands PJ's material (or what I've heard him play of it) much better

As an aside, I have thoughts on the “sloppy” Pearl Jam - I think their lack of rehearsing had to do with the lack of new material. We already know there was a schism in the band about touring without new material in tow, perhaps that was the division causing them not to get together to rehearse that much since those FOUR shows they played in 2021 were well rehearsed and they sounded great.

These anti-Matt posts really rub me the wrong way. He joined the band 8 years before I even knew a single PJ song, and he plays on almost all my favorite material. He's as big a part of the band as anybody else is IMO, and I love this band.

That’s exactly why Vedder’s new solo LP, Earthling, is likely already one of the best rock records of 2022.

The sequencing on this record is exceptional. There are three or four mini records inside, each perfectly setting up the next. Then come songs like “Fallout Today” and “The Dark,” both harkening back to some of the best parts of early 1980s pop-rock – semi-uplifting songs that aren’t too complicated yet have enough changes to get somewhere. “The Dark,” with its snappy arrangement, could have been straight off one of the decade’s better film soundtracks.

Vedder got ahold of some old recordings of his father and included his voice in Earthling’s last song, which functions as a proper, personal fade-out for a surprisingly inspired solo record.
