i've never been able to get past anthony kiedis.. sure the guitars are pretty good but the drumming has also always been pretty boring.. but yeah, the singing is especially weird/lame here

Yeah. Smith is a fucking monster. One of the best rhythm sections in rock.

I appreciate his ability to keep a solid rudimentary 4/4 foundation on which to build, but he doesn't do much else from what I've heard.

Listen to him on the "Dirty Frank" from the recent EV/Earthlings show -- I don't speak drummer but you can definitely hear how he emphasizes unexpected accents in the rhythm, in a way that really does, for lack of a better term, "propel" the music.
I'm not much of a RHCP fan but I do really appreciate the musicianship in the band.

I agree that he does what the band needs him to do. It's nothing new or creative or interesting. Just playing the roll of enthusiastic anchor, with some ghost notes sprinkled in. Sorry but I don't see how that qualifies him as an all-time great.

Just listened... sorry but to me that drum part is very basic 4/4 stuffKevin Davis wrote:Listen to him on the "Dirty Frank" from the recent EV/Earthlings show -- I don't speak drummer but you can definitely hear how he emphasizes unexpected accents in the rhythm, in a way that really does, for lack of a better term, "propel" the music.

(I don't think I quite get your references in the context of this conversation, but) yeah, it's fine.. but again, it's not "greatest of all time" stuff... it's something any good drummer can handle if they know how to meet a band's needs.. nothing mind blowingtragabigzanda wrote:In a world of Mars Volta and Katy Perry and Lady A, I'll take the drummer you just described any day of the week.tree_ wrote:I agree that he does what the band needs him to do. Smith is an absolute master of the ghost note. The only dude I’ve seen that could possibly surpass him is Keith Carlock.tragabigzanda wrote:Not at all. He plays with a great sense of dynamics and restraint. Flea is one of the most recognizable -- and rhythmically busy -- bass players ever. Chad does an amazing job of anchoring Flea's frenetic energy in something that still sounds loose, dynamic, and fun, without ever stepping on any other band member's contributions. One of the all-time great, IMO.

Re: Behind The Sun: The Official RHCP Thread.
The obvious ones; Danny Carey, Neil Peart, Keith Moon, John Bonham; people with real contributions to the form that are nearly impossible to emulate. I also love a drummer like Bryan Devendorf of The National, because he comes up with weird, creative, unexpected parts that most people wouldn't think of. I'm not saying that to be a good drummer you have to be mind-blowing, (as we've discussed, RHCP don't want or need that in their sound) I'm just saying I think people too often overrate a guy who just plays basic 4/4 stuff that any decent drummer can handle, and the great ones do something unique, special. Chad's style kinda represents RHCP's sound to me, and it just isn't my cup of tea; I find it boring. But to each their own.Kevin Davis wrote:Who are some great drummers in your view?

I think playing 4/4 rock music but making it swing and feel alive is an art in itself and much more difficult than it appears.

I can do what Chad does, and I am admittedly not a great drummer. I also wouldn’t want to because it would bore me to death

I've admittedly never listened to much RHCP, but when I have, the drums have never stood out to me. I agree with tree.
