Well, I just finished it. Some thoughts. In the beginning, I loved the tone, but by the end, overall it felt a bit uneven. I always love the sounds of Jonny Greenwood, but I'm not sure the score was appropriate for some of the moments, its poor application probably being more a fault of the filmmaker(s). It just felt a bit off at times. Also, with the pacing and vibe of the movie combined with the Greenwood score, I couldn't help but recollect There Will be Blood on many occasions, which unfairly weakened my opinion of this movie. Cumberbatch was very good, but his accent could sometimes be distracting. Would've preferred someone else, I think. Plemons was fine, didn't have to do much really, and I thought Dunst sometimes missed the mark. I liked the feeling of the movie. I liked living in this space for a while, but it left something to be desired.

7/10

The more the movie sits with me, I begin to think it’s more Benedict Cumberbatch‘s performance that let me down than the rest of the movie. And I don’t know how they found that young actor, but he did a fantastic job. Now I’m feeling more like 8.5 or 9 out of 10 and I’m pretty sure I will watch this again soon to form a more complete and accurate opinion. There is a lot here in this movie to really sink your teeth into. It’s almost like that young character was Cumberbatch’s mentor come back for redemption and destroy his curse

There's one very obvious flaw with this movie--keep going, you'll get there soon.

Plemons was underutilized, IMO, but I'm kind of a Plemons-stan.

Maybe I’ll think of it upon second viewing, hopefully soon. If I don’t in a timely enough fashion, please send a kind reminder

No that makes sense to me. My problem was the sequence boy gets the anthrax hide, uncle starts to make rope, mom sells the hides, uncle runs out of hides, boy happens to have the anthrax, uncle happens to have cut on his hand, boom--end of movie. It all could happen, I suppose, but it was just a little too convenient such that it took me out of the movie a bit, and I wish it could have been orchestrated a little differently. Otherwise I really loved it.

Hmm I’m not sure about that. I think it’s meant to be more like a cosmic, karmic morality/fairy tale than some kind of realistic master mind orchestration. It all worked out with his participation, but the pieces were in place

I don't think I agree with this description of the movie as a "cosmic, karmic morality/fairy tale." I think it did strive towards a form of realism. But "cosmic, karmic morality/fairy tale" sounds like something I would not like and I didn't like how pat the ending was so maybe you have your finger on something, that this was a moment when the realism was broken.

Yes I agree, and I don’t think it strives for any lack of realism. Morality tales can be realistic sometimes.

I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.
