Re: Behind The Sun: The Official RHCP Thread.
One Hot Minute. This is the RHCP album I had a relationship with growing up, but I never fully got it. Basically it was the only album by them I owned and at times it scared me and made me feel uncomfortable. I was unfamiliar with the rest of the band's work, save the radio singles, and as such I had zero appreciation for what Navarro was bringing to the table by contrast. I listen to it now and I realize that Navarro is exactly what "scared" me about this music. His guitar takes the band to such dark territory. I remember how good but how creepy the hand drawn liner notes were (this one and Vitalogy gave off the same late 19th century haunted antique store vibe) and how perfectly it matched the slightly satanic feel of this album. Catholic guilt is a very real thing with me.
I listened to this album start to finish for the first time in at least 20 years last night and it paid off ten fold from when I was a young poser kid who just really loved "Aeroplane". Tearjerker and Porcelain, my god. Each of these songs just sort of shapeshifts around Navarro's guitar lines. Even Californication, a bonafide classic, pales in comparison to how I feel about One Hot Minute. Has a band so known for a certain sound ever detoured this hard for just a brief moment in time before reigning it back in? No Code maybe? Up?
Anyway, what a great album. If time travel is ever invented, one of the things I'll tell my younger self is to be more patient when "Deep Kicks" comes on. Maybe this album could have taught me sooner how to listen to things more intentionally.

Im a huge fan of OHM. But im also a huge fan of Jane´s so its not surprising i guess. I love what Navarro brought to the band and were he pushed them...and i agree its dark as fuck, but also those guys were in a super dark place, specially Kiedis and Flea.

I always loved that album as well. Californication is weirdly the real separation for me more than this. I always kind of treated this as not really an RHCP album probably because of how different it was from Mothers Milk and Blood Sugar Sex Magik. I really love a lot of what this band produced in its day and hope the new album is good too.

Heard the first single again today and could not stop laughing at the weird Irish accent in the first verse. Just a bizarre choice.

It's good to have Frusciante back. Still interested to hear more.tragabigzanda wrote:I agree it’s not great. But it’s not enough to make me hate the song, which seems to be a common reaction
