I don't think I've ever disagreed so much with the general consensus around here. Feels weird.

I’m not saying it’s weird if you don’t like this. For the record.

Re: Eddie Vedder - Earthling
Y’all have got me excited to hear this thing for the first time tomorrow. From what I’m reading here, it sounds like a fun album with a nice blend of lighthearted and bittersweet moments. I like the description “backspacer with more meat on it”. I’ll take it. I just don’t want Pearl Jam to sound like that.
I’m curious to compare how each these reviewers rated this album compared to Gigaton…
For the record, Force of Nature is the best song on Backspacer. Then Gonna See My Friend. Then Just Breathe. And Johnny Guitar is the second worst song on the album after Got Some. THIS IS SCIENCE IT CANNOT BE ARGUED.
Hey, where’s Stip?

What a lovely association to have, maybe more so because of the album’s (I’m assuming; haven’t heard it yet) fun, poppy nature. I hope all went well!Ms Harmless wrote:not to get sentimental on you guys or anything, but I had surgery today (nothing bad, trans-related), and this album was a very pleasant surprise there for me when I woke up; it'll have that association going forward

I think this is one of those albums that works as a full album and not in song fragments. Something about how it flows

I'm just so frustrated that "Long Way" is so under-written; just one more line in that chorus would have lifted it

Power of Right just jumped up for me whilst reading along with the lyrics. Helps kind of put the different passages in place. Particularly loved the delivery here:
Held his invitation
He fell on his sword
Hypnotized, blood shot eyes
And he's begging for more
(Drowning with the undertow)

Re: Eddie Vedder - Earthling
I just finished Earthling and its surprisingly OK. I can understand why it is already being ranked better/equal to BS/LB, because its similar in style, but more confident and focused on each idea. Ed's voice is mixed in inoffensively, each song has something redeeming about it, and the sequencing purposefully clashes styles in a cool way. Having a break from EV with the guest vocalists at the end was a good idea. It would have been cool if he had a female vocalist or something to take over for a few more parts across the record.
I liked the sound of fallout today as a standout. The music behind all the songs works in almost all tracks, there are some cool bass tones throughout, even "the haves" sounded alright instrumentally. All the rockers have a good energy, and at least, each have a good riff to enjoy. I don't even mind that the album's mastering is smashed. (probably because i wont listen to this very much...) There's nothing on earthling that outright sucks, or needs to be skipped which is the biggest surprise.

That being said, I never listen to Backspacer or lightning bolt for enjoyment, so i wont be giving this repeated listens, i don't think. It's just not the kind of music I ever would choose to play. I'm sure ed had fun making it to show to his family but I'd rather invest time with something a bit more challenging/rewarding. Maybe Ill listen to a Peter Gabriel record next.. or check out painted shield again, or just go back to my reggae phase.
5.5/10
