Eddie Vedder - Earthling

When a band is but a fraction of Pearl Jam, but they aren't zero Pearl Jam.

stip wrote:ive only been able to give this one listen thus far and most of the songs havent developed wn independent identity yet. but a few very preliminary observations:

invincible made the strongest first impression (positive )
the haves works better in the context of the album
its kind if fun to see so many of his lesser tapped influences on display

Maybe my expectations are low, but this is exactly the kind of record I’d expect from a man pushing 60 who has lived a good life. Pearl Jam has been an important part of over half of my life, and Eddie is the main reason for that. This may sound fucking weird, but his obvious happiness in this collection of songs makes my enjoyment of the album that much greater because I’m so happy for him. Yeah, he’s a pretentious Have a lot of the time, but I really dig that the angsty young man I felt a connection with has become a happy old dad enjoying the fruits of a life well-lived. At this stage in my life, I’ll probably listen to this record more going forward than the PJ albums I adore.

I'm gonna give this another go around soon, but I don't expect much to change for me.

I think one thing that makes Invincible transcend Coldplay cheese is just how cool that 80s synth sound is; it evokes Joy Division, Duran Duran, The Cure, New Order etc before anything bad; I feel like the song is strengthened by not trying to sound "contemporary", and I guess that's something I could say about the whole album

I know, right. There must be something in there to like.

The disconnect I feel in this thread is huge.

Things will get really interesting if he invites me to use his extra ticket when Pearl Jam heads back out on the road again.
