Lots of books I haven't read on that list but very little that jumps to the front of the line or projects a vibe of "oh you HAVE to read that next."

I feel the same way. I'm looking forward to all the them for various reasons, though.

Because ST was so enthusiastic about it, I picked up the Tartt Secret History book a couple days ago at the used bookstore. The post-it note on the inside cover read:

Anyway, I read the first 45 pages this morning with my coffee and was already into it. I spent the rest of the day either doing homework for this silly online class I'm taking or procrastinating doing that homework by internetting or playing chess, but I'm excited to get back into it more seriously tomorrow.

Don't let the dry cover and title fool you, this book is pretty nuts. He basically argues that human consciousness only started about 3000-4000 years ago, and before that, we were all basically schizophrenic, being told what to do by "gods" or voices in our heads.

- Most of the Iliad and Odyssey is written as though the gods control everything the humans do. He proposes that this isn't just style, but descriptions of their actual experience. Another example is Socrates saying he was told his ideas by a "daemon", etc.
- Lots of weird and somewhat terrifying info on how brains work, and how they don't work when damaged.
- There are essentially two different people living in our heads today. Freaky shit.
- Some of the philosophy of consciousness and mind seems kinda shaky to me. His definition of consciousness is weird, but it's still a fun read.

Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

I heard a lot of things about this series, but it's very hard to follow on audiobook. I'll probably just listen to it all the way through and go back through it again more carefully. It's not bad.
