It was made right after There Will Be Blood, right? I felt like there was a bit of a feeling of disappointment (in comparison) at the time. But it's my favorite of his.

Kind of like how Jackie Brown came out after Pulp Fiction so people kind of slag it even though it's actually probably Tarantino's best movie

It got a huge amount of nominations and some wins. I don't think Scientology is actually that powerful in Hollywood.

Yeah, that seems more like a certain media outlet narrative than a truth. But I do remember hearing that around at the time, yes.

Yeah I mean obviously I have no idea, I just remember that being the narrative. It is slightly insane to look at which films got a best picture nod that year instead of The Master (Silver Linings Playbook!). I wouldn't say it got a huge amount of nominations--it was up for three Academy Awards, all for acting.

I fucking LOVE Silver Linings Playbook.... but even I would have nominated The Master over it.

I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

I meant beyond the Oscars, it was a widely celebrated movie. I think if the Scientology-influence narrative was correct it would've gotten shut out completely is all

I think a highly lauded movie from a known auteur with an all-star cast getting shut out of Best Picture/Best Director is exactly what makes it so strange!

The most likely story is that Oscar voters are by and large dullards who love pablum, and that this as much the case in 2013 as ever. The Master is more solidly in the realm of art house than the BP nominees (SLP, Argo, Life of Pi, Lincoln, Les Mis), and it was eventually Argo, of all films, that won. It's also a slightly wackier film than There Will Be Blood. So that's probably all it was. But fwiw my wife worked in Hollywood from 2002-2010, and she said that scientology was a pretty sensitive subject--she got dragged into an office when she was working at MTV films (I think?) and told to stop making jokes about it in like a "you are putting your career at risk" kind of way. So I don't think it's outside the realm of possibility that a chunk of voters could have blocked it from the BP nomination.
