Wow.
I should look up that story. I know exactly nothing about that band.

Re: Albums of 2022
A new batch of Rat-Drifting releases dropped out of the blue this past Friday (multiple releases at once was the common Rat-Drifting form in the label's initial run from 2002-2011).
In the Same Room is a series of duets for piano/trombone and drums by Doug Tielli on the former and Nick Fraser on the latter. The duo initially recorded a set of pieces in 2018 that Tielli describes as being "avoidant" and more heavily leaning on form in the practice of improvisation. This new set was recorded in late 2020, after the initial storm of coronavirus had ebbed and there was a greater desire for connection.
Bandcamp:
Impossible Burger is, I believe, the debut recording of p2p, a surrealist collage group centered on saxophonist Karen Ng. It's a musique concrete tapestry of ephemeral recordings and instrumental improvisations.
Bandcamp:
Country Phasers is a new project by Kurt Newman and on this debut self-titled recording he plays pedal steel, harmonica, and electronics, creating a somewhat glitchy instrumental space country style of music. This is pretty close to the direction that I had hoped Newman would take his Nashville Minimalism Unit, but they went in a more pop direction.

I liked Depression Cherry. I think I bought a digital copy, but don't think I've liked any of their albums more than Teen Dream and Bloom.Mickey wrote:I actually haven't really liked a record of theirs since Depression Cherry but what the hell.dad wrote:Mickey wrote:Happy Beach House day to all who celebrate
I'll give this new one a listen eventually.

In the spirit of RM discussion, what does this group sound like? I could google but yeah. RM.epilogue wrote:Ants from Up There by Black Country, New Road is fucking great. Really digging it.
Anyway, I see this group mentioned a lot lately but I guess I missed them first time around. Brand new to me.

If I'm guessing based on name and album art, I'm thinking campfire folk with indie voice?

Re: Albums of 2022
I dunno it's kind of a weird album, the mood is almost manic and the vocals are kind of shout-sung. Someone described it to me as "The Brits have discovered Slint" which I don't think is exactly true but it's definitely a little discordant. Reminds me a jazzier British Sea Power? I'm not sure I like it at all but it's definitely not campfire voice.

Sounds like you're describing a British Akron/Family somehow.Mickey wrote:I dunno it's kind of a weird album, the mood is almost manic and the vocals are kind of shout-sung. It's much more polished, and veers orchestral where A/F went folk.washing machine wrote:Sounds like you're describing a British Akron/Family somehow.Mickey wrote:I dunno it's kind of a weird album, the mood is almost manic and the vocals are kind of shout-sung. Re: Albums of 2022
Teen Dream and Bloom are two of my favorite albums of the 2010's, Bloom especially. I've liked all the rest but it's been more of a passive, "everything this band does sounds generally pretty good in the same way even when I'm not really connecting personally with it"-type appreciation. From the previews, the new stuff sounded like another dose of that, but I will definitely give it a listen.Mickey wrote:Teen Dream and Bloom really are a world apart from the rest.

Yeah that's what a first listen felt like for me. Bloom just has that extra something--like a slightly darker, menacing texture underneath the dreaminess.Kevin Davis wrote:Teen Dream and Bloom are two of my favorite albums of the 2010's, Bloom especially.
