Eddie Vedder - Earthling

I have to give Eddie Vedder this in going out and putting together a very good album in a band outside of Pearl Jam in comparing this favorably to other rock legends that pulled a similar trick:

- Bruce Springsteen: dropped the E Street Band and formed a new band he hoped would tap into his muse more. He ended up with Human Touch and Lucky Town - or one colossal disaster and one decent album. Followed it up with the Ghost of Tom Joad which has some great songs but for me was a little bit boring (I feel like he caught this vibe so much more effectively with Devils & Dust).

- Pete Townshend - some decent though poppier album post- Who. Nothing that I think is embarrassingly bad, but I don’t reach for those albums basically ever.

Which is to say Eddie I think compares favorably. This is a very pleasant album I will overindulge in for the next few months and revisit every now and then, which is far more than I expected of it (I was bracing for what I described above).

All the Best Cowboys is phenomenal. Maybe better than any Who record post-Quad.

there's something really wonderful about how Ed in Invincible sounds like a pushy preacher ("yeah, so feel important!") but then says "holy rollers, keep your cool"; it's like he's channeling their voice to undermine them
