Yeah I was surprised it got a best picture nomination. It's not a bad film, there's some really good performances. But it's VERY trope-y and expected. I saw a review that described it as like a paint by numbers Sundance film and that feels right to me.

They weren’t the first gangster movies, not even with sound (1928) or with those lead actors (1930), but Little Caesar, The Public Enemy and Scarface is an excellent trilogy of great gangster movies. Truly the first of that quality, and they also started the first gangster movie boom that lasted until the end of the 1930s.

I’ve seen all of them three times each now (over a decade or so) and I feel like they get better on each viewing.

Haven't seen Belfast. The Power of the Dog was far better than Nightmare Alley imo, but they're both worth watching.
