Yeah, they do play a role.

In my many listens the last few days I've come around on Long Way. Still at the bottom of the album for me, but it is such a soothing performance, and there are plenty of other songs to do the heavy lifting. It's a bit early for retracking, but I wonder how it would play in the spot The Haves occupies, and that was just cut. It gives you a pretty emotionally engaging run of songs Invincible - Power of Right - Brother the Cloud - Fallout Today - The Dark and then a nice cool down with Long Way before the second half of the record, which is fairly relentless until Mrs. Mills

Rather Be Home: A simple instrumental guitar piece colored in by Eddie’s wordless longing. It’s a gentle, affecting performance that unpacks the inner life of one of the characters (likely the father, since Eddie seems to inhabit that character in the songs. Plus the title offers a bit of clue). He does stretch for a few notes that are generally outside his range these days, and the vocal gets a little scratchy and distorted. I do find it a bit distracting, especially since the rest of it sounds so good, but there is also a case to be made that is a moment of despair intermixed with the constant sadness. It’s a minor song, but it gives the father some depth and texture and make him more sympathetic in the process – all through the alchemy of Eddie’s voice.

I don't think Flag Day and Earthlings mix well, though to be fair I haven't really tried

I think the Ed songs on Flag Day and Earthling fit a lot better together, than they match with Cat Power on the Flag Day soundtrack (sonically or however you explain that). But I know you are more of a "the meaning of the record" guy. Like you look for a lyrical journey from the first to the last song, while I just want an album of good songs with decent lyrics.

that's fair. And I agree that the cat power songs do sound a little out of place on Flag Day even though they do work thematically.
