I realise having done this that I appreciate the change of pace those songs bring more than I enjoy the songs themselvesMs Harmless wrote:spinning this for the first time without Long Way and The Haves; should be a fun time!

Yeah, they do play a role.Ms Harmless wrote:I realise having done this that I appreciate the change of pace those songs bring more than I enjoy the songs themselvesMs Harmless wrote:spinning this for the first time without Long Way and The Haves; should be a fun time!
In my many listens the last few days I've come around on Long Way. Still at the bottom of the album for me, but it is such a soothing performance, and there are plenty of other songs to do the heavy lifting. It's a bit early for retracking, but I wonder how it would play in the spot The Haves occupies, and that was just cut. It gives you a pretty emotionally engaging run of songs Invincible - Power of Right - Brother the Cloud - Fallout Today - The Dark and then a nice cool down with Long Way before the second half of the record, which is fairly relentless until Mrs. Mills

So other than On My Way, which songs have the Earthlings yet to play live? I've got Good and Evil and Picture.

For me 'Picture' is the worst song on this. So Ive made a tracklist swapping it out with that other Elton song 'E-ticket ride'. Yeah, Eddie picked the wrong Elton song for Earthling...

Don't like either, but suggest Tender Mercies from the Flag Day soundtrack.joostone wrote:For me 'Picture' is the worst song on this. So Ive made a tracklist swapping it out with that other Elton song 'E-ticket ride'. Yeah, Eddie picked the wrong Elton song for Earthling...

stip wrote:Rather Be Home: A simple instrumental guitar piece colored in by Eddie’s wordless longing. It’s a gentle, affecting performance that unpacks the inner life of one of the characters (likely the father, since Eddie seems to inhabit that character in the songs. Plus the title offers a bit of clue). He does stretch for a few notes that are generally outside his range these days, and the vocal gets a little scratchy and distorted. I do find it a bit distracting, especially since the rest of it sounds so good, but there is also a case to be made that is a moment of despair intermixed with the constant sadness. It’s a minor song, but it gives the father some depth and texture and make him more sympathetic in the process – all through the alchemy of Eddie’s voice.

Re: Eddie Vedder - Earthling
It sounded familiar, but I couldn't place it. I wasn't thinking we were swapping things in from other albums
I don't think Flag Day and Earthlings mix well, though to be fair I haven't really tried

Re: Eddie Vedder - Earthling
The most important thing for me is that the songs are good (not Picture for me), and that the lyrics aren't awful (The Haves). I think the Ed songs on Flag Day and Earthling fit a lot better together, than they match with Cat Power on the Flag Day soundtrack (sonically or however you explain that). But I know you are more of a "the meaning of the record" guy. Like you look for a lyrical journey from the first to the last song, while I just want an album of good songs with decent lyrics.

Re: Eddie Vedder - Earthling
that's fair. And I agree that the cat power songs do sound a little out of place on Flag Day even though they do work thematically.Anders wrote:The most important thing for me is that the songs are good (not Picture for me), and that the lyrics aren't awful (The Haves).
