Lots of heroin/booze casualties in the NYC jazz scene of the 50's and 60's -- I'm not sure how to compare "high profile" across eras, but certainly many key players of that time and place either died young in the prime of their lives or experienced the kind of slow deaths in obscurity we saw in guys like Layne and Weiland. Not unique to any one scene, unfortunately...
