Thank you KT. It is a scary time. My sister in law's parents are doing ok. There was fighting in their town, and lots of fighting in the nearby city. Yesterday evening, their town was reconquered by Ukrainian forces. They are in their early 70s, and in reasonably good health. My brother got them to buy extra food and medicine before the war broke out. They are lovely people, and I think of them often. Their son (or my sister in law's brother) and his family, got their roof ruined in an explosion at the very start of the war. They have been living in their basement since then. I have not heard of any further damage or involvement on their part. My brother and my sister in law have been able to reach them a few days in a row now, after problems before that.

In a surprise move that everyone knew would happen: Belarusian troops to enter the fight in support of Russia.

Meanwhile, Denmark nationals are flying into western Ukraine to fight in support of Ukraine and a lot of Chechnyans including a general have been k.i.a.

Chechnya is run like a mafia, by a friend of Putin. It is also a part of Russia, so no surprise those tropps are involved on Russia’s side.

The comment about Chechnya was due to their president (?) saying no one in his army had gotten even as much as a nose bleed.

Less than a week into the war, it seems increasingly likely that Vladimir Putin is heading towards a historic defeat. He may win all the battles but lose the war. Putin’s dream of rebuilding the Russian empire has always rested on the lie that Ukraine isn’t a real nation, that Ukrainians aren’t a real people, and that the inhabitants of Kyiv, Kharkiv and Lviv yearn for Moscow’s rule. That’s a complete lie – Ukraine is a nation with more than a thousand years of history, and Kyiv was already a major metropolis when Moscow was not even a village. But the Russian despot has told his lie so many times that he apparently believes it himself.

Apparently the Ukrainian soldiers on that island that told the Russian warships to "fuck off" before being bombed are alive and possible in Russian custody.

Yeah I've seen some other stories like that supposedly debunked.

It has been pretty wild to see the ramp up of propaganda on all sides, the rapid adoption of rhetoric learned from The Discourse creators, etc.

No way of knowing what's true, or if any of it's true, but on a meta level, it's enlightening to watch the machinery come alive.

What could possibly be a lie? Most people and countries still believe Russia will win. Much of the rest isn’t even in dispute.
