Re: Movie: The Batman (Battinson)
I don't think Catwoman is in any remote danger of being perceived as a submissive to batman, or nothing more than a plaything for him. Her whole character has always been the opposite of this, so it's not some interesting new choice. Her Catwoman seems like the most generic, expected take on Catwoman imaginable.
That said, it does sound from the interview that she wasn't just virtue signaling. Just making a pretty obvious choice about a vapid character.
Why am I taking about this? This is a show for children.

yep, exactly; I think Zoe is just telling the fans who feel represented by comic Catwoman that she thought about them, even if no one else doestree_ wrote:So, if we know she's bisexual from the comics, I guess it is messed up that hollywood feels the need to sanitize the character for mainstream audiences.. cause I never really got that impression from the movies.. just thought she was manipulative

This is about representation. There's the slightest tinge of a hint of that in The Dark Knight Rises, with Juno Temple. But it's barely there, probably because it's a PG-13 movie from a decade ago and the studio thought it was inherently risquetree_ wrote:So, if we know she's bisexual from the comics, I guess it is messed up that hollywood feels the need to sanitize the character for mainstream audiences.. cause I never really got that impression from the movies.. just thought she was manipulative

Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn sure have! Very woke intercourse.tree_ wrote:This is about representation. the women of superhero stories have historically been written to serve the male hero, without agency, without a brain of their own; there has been a push to change that in recent times and Zoe is just saying that she's part of thatBurtReynolds wrote:I don't think Catwoman is in any remote danger of being perceived as a submissive to batman, or nothing more than a plaything for him. Re: Movie: The Batman (Battinson)
not sexually, though? From what I've seen she just sort of latches on to Batman's plan to save the day, cause of her own survival instincts and cause it's a good plan, not cause of some kind of sexual dominance? I just think she's always been a shady character, and I wouldn't want a character like that to represent me, cauase I don't wanna be shadyMs Harmless wrote:the women of superhero stories have historically been written to serve the male hero, without agency, without a brain of their own; there has been a push to change that in recent times and Zoe is just saying that she's part of thatBurtReynolds wrote:I don't think Catwoman is in any remote danger of being perceived as a submissive to batman, or nothing more than a plaything for him. also, what we call "sexuality" isn't just about who we've fucked; it's also about our romantic orientation, the people we're made to want to love, date, flirt with, etc

Re: Movie: The Batman (Battinson)
That's not remotely true of very many female comic characters in the last 40 years, especially Catwoman, a character who literally uses other characters as cat toys. It's her whole thing.Ms Harmless wrote:the women of superhero stories have historically been written to serve the male hero, without agency, without a brain of their own; there has been a push to change that in recent times and Zoe is just saying that she's part of thatBurtReynolds wrote:I don't think Catwoman is in any remote danger of being perceived as a submissive to batman, or nothing more than a plaything for him. you only like morally good characters? some people enjoy villains and morally grey characterstree_ wrote:not sexually, though? Catwoman is obviously a sexual person, I don't know why you consider that debatable

Re: Movie: The Batman (Battinson)
no i'm just saying if i possess a quality or characteristic that I would want represented in a character in a hollywood movie cause I want to raise awareness of it in the public, i would probably want it represented by a more wholesome character.. cause that's what it's all about, public perception, right?

Re: Movie: The Batman (Battinson)
it's true to varying degrees in comic books and comic book movies; if Catwoman was always something of an outlier, then that's one reason she is so loved by female comic book fans; it doesn't mean Catwoman has always been written and portrayed in all the best waysBurtReynolds wrote:That's not remotely true of very many female comic characters in the last 40 years, especially Catwoman, a character who literally uses other characters as cat toys. I don't know I'd say for most of my lifetime DC has had its fair share of strong female characters. At least from my perspective and feel free to take that for what its worth but characters like Lois Lane, Dinah Lance, Wonder Woman, Zatanna, Hawkgirl and any of the various female Bat Family members to name a few are all written with brains and agency.

Re: Movie: The Batman (Battinson)
I don't understand your beef here. We're talking about representation in Hollywood, and I've already said I think it's messed up they choose to sanitize the character. I'm just taking it a step further by saying I'd rather more mainstream wholesome characters had these qualities.JuanHamm wrote:tree_ wrote:i don't even know what my opinion is though.. just talkingJuanHamm wrote:tree, why have an opinion at all here?
