no i'm just saying if i possess a quality or characteristic that I would want represented in a character in a hollywood movie cause I want to raise awareness of it in the public, i would probably want it represented by a more wholesome character.. cause that's what it's all about, public perception, right?

and there are some LGBTQ+ people who don't care about seeing LGBTQ+ villains (and *only* seeing LGBTQ+ villains is a big problem)

I want to see good, positive, "heroic" role models who represent me; but more important than that, I want it to be shown that being LGBTQ+ is completely normal, and people with all sorts of moral compass are LGBTQ+; so putting them in our movies helps

I don't know I'd say for most of my lifetime DC has had its fair share of strong female characters. At least from my perspective and feel free to take that for what its worth but characters like Lois Lane, Dinah Lance, Wonder Woman, Zatanna, Hawkgirl and any of the various female Bat Family members to name a few are all written with brains and agency.

it really depends on the writers, there's a lot of work still to do; and it doesn't help that disgustingly misogynistic factions in comic book fandom (and the writers who make them more or less happy) still exist

Most of my Daredevil experience was reading Mark Waid's and Brian Michael Bendi's runs. I've read the odd arc outside of that but I'm far from an expert so I definitely defer to you.

both great runs most of the worst offending stuff was Frank Miller's; I respect his talent and his contribution to comics (and we wouldn't have a modern DD without him), but he really did love punishing women for spectacle

One thing I've noticed about this release cycle, in contrast to the last time there was a live-action standalone Bats movie, is that I feel no personal investment in this thing being good. Back then, it felt real high stakes for me whether I liked a Batman movie or not. I guess that was 10 years ago now so it makes sense that it doesn't feel the same anymore

Okay, I posted this and then I watched it on opening night anyway. I really liked it. It's a different take on the character than we've seen so far, really bringing the weird withdrawn obsessive loner to the forefront in a way we hadn't seen in the movies yet. Yes, much more than before, trust me.

Is it the most expressive piece of moviemaking in recent memory? No, but it has some style, a clear aesthetic identity. There are recurring visual motifs, and a few really nice touches. At the very least it's not made up almost entirely on boxy overlit middle shots like the worst of the MCU

The music is very evocative, the performances are uniformly good, it makes some clever creative choices. Maybe having low expectations helped, but I was pleasantly surprised by this. It somehow managed to be its own thing, far from the stale rigidness of the Nolan movies or the cartoony shenanigans of other depictions.

A few stray observations below. I don't think any of them are real spoilers, but everyone's got a different line.

- I just love that the police hate his guts in this one. They just despise him
- Dano was so good! His scenes out of the mask were tremendous, and I really liked the twist they gave to his relationship with Bats
- By making the public-facing Bruce Wayne as much of a reclusive weirdo as they made him here, it becomes HILARIOUSLY OBVIOUS that he is Batman. No hiding behind a smarmy charade
- The piano music in the end credits is dope
- They went a little too far on making Catwoman sympathetic and giving her noble motivations, though there's nuance to her story
- I can't believe it took this long for there to be a movie where Batman does a goofy voiceover throughout. That's such a big part of the source material, it's funny that nobody thought to do it until now. It works.

Really not sure how people will react to it. As we were leaving, I heard people around us remark "that was awful!". I would guess there's zero chance this movie doesn't earn a fair amount of ridicule for how dour and self-serious it is. Which, I dunno, I think given this industry-wide pivot to lightheartedness and comedy... I think there should be space for dour self-seriousness too. If only to break it up a bit.
