Re: Eddie Vedder - Earthling
Gigaton is good. I’m still impressed the band had it in them to make it.
Earthling is better though. It creates a certain craving for its music, one that the Pearl Jam fan hasn’t experienced since Riot Act or Lost Dogs. My count is at least 4 songs* that top anything on Gigaton and also sit comfortably alongside Pearl Jam’s top tier. What a successful achievement for those who made this album.
Altered track list:
Invincible*
RoJ*
Brother TC*
Picture*
Long Way
The Dark
Fallout
Try
Mrs mills
On my way
Put the rest at the end if you like or just play Get it Back.
I kinda feel lucky again to be a fan.

Giving this my first listen now, and I have to admit I'm liking it more than I expected to

Re: Eddie Vedder - Earthling
I think Earthling is a fantastic record. And not everything needs to be cataloged and ranked or whatever... there's plenty of room for both.
But I do think, right now, I think Gigaton is the overall stronger artistic piece. Maybe that will change. But either way both records have a lot to offer. Each has strengths. I'm glad both exist.

Invincible, almost as enjoyable on first listen as You Are and Yellow Moon. Incredible.Rangi Guy wrote:Giving this my first listen now, and I have to admit I'm liking it more than I expected to

Re: Eddie Vedder - Earthling
I really like Earthling but that's a hard disagree. I don't think I'm alone in thinking the first 5 tracks on Gigaton are better than just about anything Earthling has to offer, but also why compare Ed's solo album this way to Pearl Jam? They are so different. When I listen to Pearl Jam, I want to hear Ed's words and singing, but I also want to hear Stone and Jeff drive that rhythm and those sweet McCready touches and solos. The interplay betweet Matt and Jeff on Quick Escape is phenomenal. The creativity of the band in general on Dance. Ed rocks on Earthling, but even when it sounds like Pearl Jam, as in the case of Fallout Today or the back end of The Dark, it is a loving imitation, or at best, impression of Pearl Jam.Matters wrote:My count is at least 4 songs* that top anything on Gigaton

I took a week off from this and came back and yep still fucking good. Even Rose of Jericho is really doing it for me now. At first, the faster songs were lower on the list for me but now I'm all bammer emoji on that shit.

I hadn't listened for almost a week. Felt great! Just a solid, enjoyable listen from start to finish, with a handful of legitimately great tracks.Ms Harmless wrote:I'm giving this a break for a while to see how I feel about it when I come back

I don't know what you're asking of me, but appreciation of these songs is subjective; if you love them to death that's greatlowlight79 wrote:What's not good about them?Ms Harmless wrote:by being not goodlowlight79 wrote:How?Ms Harmless wrote:"Long Way" and "The Haves" keep this from being as good as Gigaton

Re: Eddie Vedder - Earthling
This is crazy talk indeed. Gigaton is miles better than anything on Earthling. Better songwriting, better production, better instrumentation. A lot of earthling sounds underwritten. Like "hey, here's a riff, let's go with it". Especially the punky rockers. I know that's what they were going for, but I'm still not a fan. Reminds me of Backspacer.Matters wrote:Gigaton is good. Saying Picture or Rose of Jericho is better than Dance of the Clairvoyants, Quick Escape, Seven O'Clock, Who Ever Said etc is blasphemy IMO.
