There's also a short-story version of Swamplandia! in Karen Russell's book St. Lucy's Home for Girls Raised by Wolves, if you can find that; it's called "Ava Wrestles the Alligator."

I was talking to my wife about this and mentioned that I didn't think I had any fictional role models. She immediately said, "Pfffft. Um, Chandler Bing. And Jean-Luc Picard. No fictional role models. Please."

I guess Batman, too. I did look up to Batman. So, there you go. Batman, Chandler Bing and Captain Picard.

Steve Albini wrote:Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

I had to look up who that was. I don't mention that to sound cool but, rather, to point out how clueless I am.
