one thing I love about Michael Giacchino's score is that it's totally lacking in obvious, generic, thuddy floor-tom "action drums" (a la Nolan's, yawn); it's nearly all subtle, quiet mood-pieces instead (with occasional classy trumpet stabs to bring the kapow); it brings the film much further towards Horror than Action (and alas, I see a lot of people wanting an action movie were disappointed with it in general)

I like the score, too. I've been listening to it a bit while doing work. Ave Maria works well enough in the movie but it's a little annoying when I'm just listening on Spotify in the semi-background

Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I would be interested in seeing this. After posting I realized I did kind of enjoy his Basquiat performance, so I'd be open to this as the characters are in the same ballpark.

You should check it out. Even if you don't like Wright in it, the whole cast fucking brings it. It's maybe the last time I gave a shit about a Pacino performance.

Yeah, I heard that every time, too, but I still liked it

I keep thinking about the movie. I think I may have liked it even more than I realized at the time. Certain scenes, certain musical moments, certain images, just keep popping into my head and random times and leave me thinking about the movie as a whole again and again.

It also made me want to go back and revisit the comics -- some that I read a long, long time ago, but also those stories I missed that seem to really inform this movie. Like Hush, for example.

There is a ton to unpack here...

1. Most everything is derivative, yes. But derivate doesn't have to be a pejorative.
2. Derivative doesn't equal suck -- something can suck and still be fairly original; something can be derivative and really good.
3. Mass media consumption wearing me thin as I age has not been my experience.
4. However, age and experience are factors. The longer you live, the more you experience/see, the less original things seem. Because you learn/see/understand where more and more things come from. But this too can be separate from "impressed." Unless originality or novelty are the only things that impress you. I can be really impressed by a shot in a movie even as I know where I've seen something similar before, for example.
5. A lot impresses me so I may not be the audience for these questions.

There's something to this but I'm not there yet. Still constantly blown away by stuff I identify as artful and/or exciting (and, conversely, pissed off at stuff that I identify as stale, artless and boring).

Yeah, what comes to mind for me is listening to Pearl Jam in my youth, and my dad saying it's crap. To me back then, it was so fresh and exciting, but now it's mostly crap.
