just read a short article that notes how all the politicians are raking in cash from fundraiser dinners etc as a result of the shutdown. I want to kill someone.

It's really our fault. We re-elect 90% of these idiots every two years. As Bill Maher loves to say - Democrats are lame and Republicans are nuts. We're at the point where real damage done to the country might be exactly what we need to wake people up and make them start paying attention. The right wing base is not the majority and we don't have to "govern by crises."

they're the majority in the house, which represents 16% of our political system. taking a closer look, the people most responsible for the shut down are identified as 80 house members:

While the most salient demographic fact about America is that it is becoming more diverse, Republican districts actually became less diverse in 2012. ... the average House Republican district became two percentage points more white in 2012.

Seventy-six of the members who signed the Meadows letter are male. Seventy-nine of them are white.

In short, these eighty members represent an America where the population is getting whiter, where there are few major cities, where Obama lost the last election in a landslide, and where the Republican Party is becoming more dominant and more popular. Meanwhile, in national politics, each of these trends is actually reversed.

My wife said yesterday: "I don't care if we have Maryland represented by people fresh out of grad school, I am not voting for any of these fucking idiots ever again. Next election, no incumbents."

A little harsh maybe, but perhaps a "electoral enema" is what's need.
