Re: Ukraine
The "Masters of War" lyric about lawn signs comes to mind.

You put signs in your lawn
“In this house we believe
BLM, Science,” yawn.
But I see through your eyes
And I see through your skin
Like I see through the water
My hat is like a shark’s fin
(patriotic choking noises)

Re: Ukraine
Heartbreaking listening to their stories.
There’s people being buried in mass graves Just pits.
Their names aren’t even being taken to let their families know.
They’re just burying them. And out of necessity
What the fuck is going on
This world

Re: Ukraine
"More than 40 Republican U.S. senators on Thursday called for President Biden to aid “the transfer of aircraft and air defense systems” to Ukraine a day after officials quashed Poland’s offer to send fighter jets with American help.
The senators said in a letter that they “strongly disagree” with the Biden administration’s stance on Poland’s proposal and said the Ukrainian military is in “dire need of more lethal aid” as it fights Russia’s invasion. They urged the president to work with NATO allies on providing those resources — uniting behind a step that U.S. officials have warned could draw the Western alliance into war."
For a guy that wants bipartisanship to sail again, Joe won't be able to pass up this opportunity.

Re: Ukraine
whole thing is pretty terrible
Russia's strategy at this point just seems to be to surround the cities and pound civilians / force a humanitarian disaster in the hopes the Ukraine government surrenders to save lives
their fail-safe is to force a nuclear accident at a captured power plant
basically a country-sized hostage situation

This podcast was excellent. Thanks for bringing it to our attention. I listened to all of Ezra's podcasts until Trump lost 2020, then decided to take a (somewhat) break from politics and never really got back into the podcast thing. I've always held Ezra Klein up there above most media figures. He's smart but humble and very down to Earth.Hatfield wrote:Ezra Klein had a great conversation with Fiona Hill on his podcast. Re: Ukraine
Here's a small update from my relatives in Ukraine. They lost the gas to their house for a few days, but now it's back, so they have heat and can use their stove.
All the nearby shops are closed. So getting food is difficult. They live in an agricultural area, however, it's still late winter there.
The Russians sent a relief shipment to Kherson, but the natives refused to accept it.

Good to hear they’re safe Anders. I understand them not taking it but that’s part of the plan too. They’re gonna cut off all supply lines and people are gonna just be drives to take their aid. And that’ll be portaged awesome Russia saving the day and ‘liberating’ them
Ah evil bind to be in

Re: Ukraine
Yes, happy that they are safe for now. They live next to the only city that has been fully conquered so far, Kherson. And that city seems to have had it a lot better than Mariupol and Kharkiv that are still fighting.dimejinky99 wrote:Anders wrote:Here's a small update from my relatives in Ukraine. There’s a video earlier in the thread of the people of Kherson marching in protest against the invaders. But there seems to be little killing in that city at the moment.

Re: Ukraine
I think people are to quick to say what about this, and what about this, when the war has only lasted two weeks, and it’s still escalating. A hospital was bombed just a few days ago.
Of course politicians should think about the whole world in general. I strongly believe and know to my inner core, that all people are of equal worth, whether female or male or any gender, young or old (although we as adults have an extra responsibility for children), regardless of creed or appearance, the color of their skin or who they are attracted to. In Ukraine, the US, Ireland, Norway, the Philippines, Jordan, Iraq, Botswana and anywhere else.
Afghanistan is difficult. In the 90s there was very little western influence there, few or no soldiers, and yet it was awful there. After 9/11 the west sent in soldiers, they were there for 20 years. After they pulled out, the Taliban again seized power. Very difficult to cooperate with them, or to go there to help and feel safe. Funds for the Taliban probably won’t help.
Again, this really is better suited for another thread. Things are bad in Ukraine now. Let’s not go «but what about» in this thread, and rather focus on Ukraine.
