weird (ha! something you failed to account for and predict!), but I'll entertain it
I knew it would come up eventually, but I wasn't going to make more work for myself by addressing it until it did

Ah. Brietbart. Macphisto. Not exactly good-faith representations of the party of conservative intellectual thought.
I believe you're conflating conservatism with racism. Shocking, I tell ya.
I posted three published articles from right of center sources when this question was asked a few pages ago and they got more or less ignored because they are an "exception" somehow.

The Fresh Prince could never have handled being at a Dean Martin Roast.
Let me tell you, Homer Simpson is cock of nothing!

Well, it's kind of the job of a comedian to push/find boundaries. Overly sensitive comedians don't tend to be very good. I do see the point being made, maybe it was in bad taste, but Smith's reaction was too much.Mickey wrote:I believe the point about race is that black women have historically been (and continue to be) scrutinized for their hair, especially for having "natural" hairstyles, which Rock as the host of a documentary about this very topic should have been more sensitive about before making a joke about JPS's hair, which is both natural and a choice she made as a result of a medical condition.Rob wrote:I can't believe this is worthy of close to 30 pages.
I don't understand why race matters here.
Will Smith is an icon in our generation, but off screen has been a lunatic for quite some time. Chris Rock handled it as well as you can. I'm really not sure there's more to it than this.

The point is you don't know, cause there's no way of knowing, and that's an awfully drastic measure to take when you don't know. And I even heard it as a compliment, cause GI Jane is a hot, honorable character. If he had called her Shrek, that's an insult. That simple.warehouse wrote:yeah he wasn't being insulting, chris rock is known for pushing the boundaries of compliments lol. you guys are gonna pull a muscle reaching so farspike wrote:it certainly wasn't an insult (assuming rock didn't know about the alopecia).washing machine wrote:fucking treetree_ wrote:I am more and more unable to see how it wasn't a compliment, the more times I see it.warehouse wrote:tree pretending the joke was a compliment is the best part of this whole thing.

lol you heard it as a compliment about 10 pages ago. did you see her face after the remark? did you think that was the face of someone who just received a compliment? get real dude. you can argue smith was out of line, but pretending the comment was a compliment is way too far.tree_ wrote:The point is you don't know, cause there's no way of knowing, and that's an awfully drastic measure to take when you don't know. Seems that way to me, and I explained how I got there. You can't even explain how that was an insult.Ms Harmless wrote:no, the point (being made by Tree) was "Chris Rock was trying to be nice actually"wease wrote:Neither is Will Smith, but that wasn’t really the point.Ms Harmless wrote:Dean Martin wasn't a great guywease wrote:The Fresh Prince could never have handled being at a Dean Martin Roast.

Yeah, she misunderstood him is my opinion. Even Will Smith thought it was a harmless joke until he saw her face.warehouse wrote:lol you heard it as a compliment about 10 pages ago. did you see her face after the remark? did you think that was the face of someone who just received a compliment? get real dude. you can argue smith was out of line, but pretending the comment was a compliment is way too far.tree_ wrote:The point is you don't know, cause there's no way of knowing, and that's an awfully drastic measure to take when you don't know.
