I’d like to see Dave play drums for a new band for his last act.

If it didn’t fully embrace the template it was certainly a preface.

One By One was also the first album Dave did not play drums on

I guess it's not altogether surprising that, as they became a steadier working band, the music gradually became more workmanlike. I like One By One but I definitely hear this in it, and I pretty much stopped listening on the next one (though I did pop back in for Wasting Light and really enjoyed it, though it's much closer in spirit to One By One than anything that came before). I should check out the others I missed, looks like there have been quite a few...

I'm listening to the first album now -- man it's just great. One of the great rock albums of the '90's IMO.

What a tune Hey Johnny Park is - there's a killer version of it from the Bizarre Festival '97 in Germany, when Taylor had only been in the band a few months. Pat Smear doing a great job on backing vocals.

Lost touch with the Foo's as they gradually turned into an enormous stadium act ala Guns N Roses (keyboard player, extra guitar player, female backing singers etc) and constantly extending every song live is incredibly annoying, but I did love their first two albums.

What's worth checking out actually are the b-sides to the 3rd album. It seemed they were turning away from that harder sound so relegated those kind of tunes to b-side status in favour of the more radio-friendly sound on TINLTL.
Also superb (and a 3rd album b-side) is their Floyd cover "Have A Cigar" with Hawkins on vocals - it's killer.

Wait, what?? "They've mostly been pretty shitty since One by One, that's the stuff I figured you'd be into, KD." What are you trying to say here, Trag?? :)

In all seriousness, I plant my flag for their debut on page 1 of this thread. It's great, far and away their best album IMO. I fell off the wagon with the double album -- I didn't hate it, but I was into other things at the time and it just wasn't a good enough album to transcend that headspace. I feel like I've lost track of a lot of bands that way.

I may very well dig their later period stuff, I've honestly never really heard it apart from Wasting Light (which I like) and a few singles that I don't really remember (though I guess it's safe to say that they didn't fill me with enthusiasm to go seek out more).

This is still one of those bands where some days I love and some days I loathe. I will always love the first two albums but after that, and Wasting Light, depending on the day it hits me just right or totally wrong.

I hope they continue on in some form, though the Taylor Hawkins energy on stage was always a plus - but I guess if Bruce carried on the E Street Band without Clarence, Dave can do it too.

I almost want to interrupt my Phish journey to bang through this while everyone is focused on it…

Also relevant with our recent focus on RHCP: did you know Dave Grohl opened for the Chili Peppers as both a member of Nirvana and Foo Fighters. It’s all coming together.

It's pretty glorious when Dave finally kicks into the refrain for Ill Stick Around after so many "I dont owe you anything"

Same. Have 'Pocketwatch' on right now.

The instrumental "Bruce" from this sounds so much like one of those Nirvana rehearsal instrumentals.
