You know, making it a black issue is kind of racist

and as a white person I recognise that that is the kind of society I've been immersed in, and hence a power I've held, all my life; I've spent a while trying to unlearn the kneejerk entitlementJorge wrote:I also don't mean to project it onto Joe's post, all he said was "no comment". I've not "made it one", it just is one, on some levels; I think refusing to recognise that is racisttree_ wrote:You know, making it a black issue is kind of racist

Most of the conversations I've read don't mention race. I get that black women have faced discrimination over their hairstyles and whatnot, but I do not see how this joke (lame or not) came from a place of racism.Ms Harmless wrote:nobody is surprised by thistree_ wrote:I still don’t see how this is a black issue

The people supporting or condemning Smith, would be very different if it was a white guy slapping a white guy. Most people supporting Smith now seem to make it an issue of race (black man standing up for his wife, black women have been ridiculed for too long etc). That is after Smith himself said he is sorry, and that his behaviour was unacceptable. Also many black people pointing out that the victim was black, and some of those claiming that Smith would not have gone on stage to hit a white comedian.

again, I'm not surprised by any of this either; I spent most of my life around "nothing about race"Rob wrote:Most of the conversations I've read don't mention race. I think a huge number of white comedians deserve a slapAnders wrote:The people supporting or condemning Smith, would be very different if it was a white guy slapping a white guy. So is your defense that white guys can't ever see racism? Many of us live in America, and there's plenty of it here. I see it all the time. Just not here. Your argument is framed as being sympathetic to minorities, but coming across as anger towards white guys.Ms Harmless wrote:again, I'm not surprised by any of this either; I spent most of my life around "nothing about race"Rob wrote:Most of the conversations I've read don't mention race. I don’t agree. Leave comedians out of violence.Ms Harmless wrote:I think a huge number of white comedians deserve a slapAnders wrote:The people supporting or condemning Smith, would be very different if it was a white guy slapping a white guy. One thing that would be interesting to think about would be the rhetorical stakes in what that Facebook post implies vis a vis black Americans and socialized behaviors. I suspect it might not have the exact effect its author intended.

Today is gonna be the day that they're gonna throw it back to you...
Sing with me, everyone!
By now, you should've somehow realized what you gotta do
Come on! Sing along!
I don't believe that anybody feels the way I do, about you now
'cause maybe...you're gonna be the one that saves me...

Re: Are you not going to watch the Oscars this year?
I don't think Smith, as a professional actor, writing an official letter of apology for disrupting a celebrity event, should be used as a gotcha to validate anyone's individual sense of morality; the letter was an occupational expectation that he fulfilled
and it's funny to see the number of white people who normally don't think any celebrity owes accountability or apology letters to their audience, suddenly congratulating him on making them look right

If karma is real, harmless will one day be arrested for slapping some poor white amateur comedian on a street corner trying to make a buck, casually roasting folks
