Another thing I have always wondered about. Do people really go see films because a 'brand' actor is in it? I know Pitt, Clooney etc draw the female demographic. But the public at large, will they go see something purely cos Shaya le donk or di Caprio are in it?

Does that really happen?

Well yeah, but it meant they had to write entirely new scenes to do it.

I guess if you admire their acting from past movies / think they're hot enough, then yes.

A name that has associative value can sway you if you're on the fence about something. "Well, that could be a decent film or a total summer fodder retardfest. Oh, George Clooney's in it? He tends to make pretty interesting films."

When I see any big names attached, usually my response is 'summer blockbuster bullshit. Lets see something else'

Unless I know the director or writers work.

Is that normal?

That sounds awful hipster and I'm really not.

Fuck this.

Ask me about some Tolkien minutiae.

the public at large will go make Adam Sandler a billion dollars a movie.

There are definitely actors (brad Pitt is one, actually) whose involvement in a film makes me more likely to see it

Brad Pitt doesn't just draw the female crowd. I like most of his work and will be inclined to go see a movie if he is in it.

I think that's why I like Gosling. He hasn't put a foot wrong in any film he's chosen to be in. They're all wonderfully great stories in different ways. Plus he's a pretty great actor. But as stip says, I'm more likely to look it up if he's in it but I wouldn't go see it just cos he's in it.
It's an odd one. Ireland got the highest cinema attendance per capita in Europe and it seems we just go see anything. People here aren't drawn in by brand name actors.

When you have the refined palate and discriminating taste of the American movie going public you need little things like name brand actors to push a movie over the top.

We're no better.

Ive the best coolest (generally art house/cult film) cinema literally 1 minute walk from my house and I rarely use it.
Though I've fallen asleep every time I've gone there for something.
Need to stop that.

I just don't see why they felt the need to push him so hard in the direction of lowbrow humor. He can be a lighter or more playful character without being such a shining beacon of cheeseball jokery.

It's almost like they were trying to offset some other factor that they worried might weigh down the tone of the film, but I can't say what that might have b-

oh.
I full on cackled in the cinema during this part. Fucking godawful.

I don't think i care enough to watch the next 6 hours of this.

you know, some of that stuff didn't bother me because tonally the hobbit is a far lighter book than LOTR. I guess where it gets confusing is when they switch between that and the more serious 'set up LOTR' sequences. The story telling is not nearly limber enough for that stark a contrast.

so what I'm gathering from this thread is that if Ryan Gosling and Brad Pitt were in the next Hobbit movie, it would be pretty good.
