theirs were the majority of the opinions going viral, and other opinions didn't (if you wanted to read those you had to go out of your way to do it), as per usualE.H. Ruddock wrote:Is it? the "consensus" you're seeing depends on the worldview you've built, that's my only point

If you want to say that Will Smith was wrong, or that violence as a reaction to comedy (or speech) is absurd, is cruel, is pathetic, etc….I’m all for it. But I can’t tell you how stupid a person looks when they (I honestly hope pretend) to believe that this is going to set a “precedence” that will change the degree to which comedians can feel safe.
Don’t do that. That’s ridiculous. That’s beyond parody. And you can easily argue the wrongness of what happened without inventing stakes.
No-name comedians face on-stage aggressions from time to time, and then they get back on stage and do it all again. Children go back to school after a shooting, for fuck’s sake.
A celebrity slapped a celebrity at a celebrity ball. What an absurd thing to be wringing your hands about.

Re: Are you not going to watch the Oscars this year?
you've argued comedians get the right to talk about comedy, first and foremost; you're right
so I'm arguing that Black people, especially Black women, should have the right to be centered here
as for white women like me, I'm a million pages past the point where I should have stopped talking, as usual

Re: Are you not going to watch the Oscars this year?
I only brought up the "precedent" point because I heard several comedians discussing it. I think it'd only be somewhat of a concern if the overwhelming backlash against Will Smith weren't so strong. Pretty sure we're all relaxing at this point, at which it's clear he has no real support for what he did. Comedians stand strong!

Re: Are you not going to watch the Oscars this year?
Imagine not expressing your opinion because of your skin color or gender lol. One life and I'm supposed to spend it in a state of neurotic anxiety over whether or not I'm properly centering this or that identity group? I think not.
Comedians are empowered a tiny bit. Will Smith movies will be delayed by a few months. None of this is a big deal.
Yeah this is all deeply silly. If anything, the censors will continue to lose ground every time the consequences of their moronic ideology manifest themselves. Like I've said: we're winning. The cancellers have become the cancelled!McParadigm wrote:If you want to say that Will Smith was wrong, or that violence as a reaction to comedy (or speech) is absurd, is cruel, is pathetic, etc….I’m all for it. that's your decision; I experience very little neurotic anxiety over trying to do this, for the same reason you don't: life is shortBurtReynolds wrote:Imagine not expressing your opinion because of your skin color or gender lol. Michael Che on Weekend Update:
As a comedian, I'm tired of people putting their own insecurities on our joke intentions. I mean, I can't make a joke about it being cold outside without somebody yelling back "stop making fun of my small penis! Keep my small penis out your mouth!"

maybe Sykes thought the joke was fine, maybe her main concern is hosting the Oscars and making sure it runs smoothly
