Yeah, I guess I just don't know what "disability" means, and the dictionary I use must be incorrect

You guys do realize you can type "what kind of alopecia does Jada Pinkett Smith have" into google and hit enter, right? She herself isn't sure, but hair loss is her only symptom (according to her), and she seems at peace with it now, even saying “Me and this alopecia are going to be friends.”

goddamnit Rob.
We had a good, natural conclusion to the thread.
I knew I should I have locked it.

Re: Are you not going to watch the Oscars this year?
her relationship to her alopecia doesn't mean it isn't a disability (I was born with mine and made peace with it a long time ago, it's still there however)Rob wrote:You guys do realize you can type "what kind of alopecia does Jada Pinkett Smith have" into google and hit enter, right? So can a disability be something as simple as something that makes you somewhat uncomfortable with your physical appearance? Cause in that case my huge ass skin tag on my lower back would count too

Disability:
noun
a physical or mental condition that limits a person's movements, senses, or activities.
Ms Harmless, from what I've read, YOU have a disability. She has a condition which causes hair loss.

ah! "condition", interesting
disability and chronic / terminal illness (including autoimmune disease) tend to be collected together as an umbrella these days
another aspect that that definition is missing is "experiences ableism"
and that definition is a Medical Model definition

Condition simply indicates a state of health, whether well or ill; a condition conferring illness might be further classified as a disease or a disorder—however, condition might be used in place of disease or disorder when a value-neutral term is desired.
