Re: Eddie Vedder - Dreams in Color (the San Diego Years)
Thanks for this compilation, I had not listened to these songs for years !
By rediscovering them, I have noted that Better Man (track #16) sounded off pitch, and by checking with my guitar, it is not in regular pitch A440.
Some of the sources were apparently impacted by tapes being copied at incorrect speed back in the day (several early PJ bootlegs have a similar issue).
I have reviewed all tracks by playing along as other songs have a similar issue, and tried to adjust speeds in Audacity so the pitch is correct.
Here are the values I applied when I found out the pitch was incorrect. The values can be off by around +/- 0.5%, I have tried to find what sounds correct to my ears.
It is quite striking when listening to this version of Better Man, compared to the well-known PJ ones.
Homeless is off-key compared to the version on track #5.
For Sick O' Pussies, the bass plays some slapped E and A notes at the end, I have used it as reference.
And Just a Book confirmed that the same correction can be applied across the 4 tracks (verse chords F#m D, chorus with a bass progression starting from an open E string).
The original Daddy Could Swear song starts with a riff based on a E minor chord, so the correction (slow down) sets the cover to the correct pitch.
By applying the same speed correction on What a Wonderful World, it appears that Vedder had adapted the original chords (verse B G#m E F#) for his register 3 steps below (chords F Dm Bb C).
Fun fact: take the same chords 1 step higher (G Em C D) and you have Last Kiss.
I hope it helps.

The 2 other versions of Believe You Me are correct (the main chords of the verse are G and C). I'm Alive is a blues-based song in A.BAD RADIO - WHAT THE FUNK CASSETTE 89
07 - Believe You Me -> -2.5%
08 - I'm Alive -> -2.5%
The pitch is a bit too sharp, a small speed decrease corrects it.BAD RADIO - TOWER RECORDS CASSETTE 89
10 - Better Man (Live) -> -1.5%
The pitch was quite impacted here, with the songs sounding more than a semitone too flat.SOLO DEMO 88-89
13 - Homeless (Acoustic) -> +4.25%
14 - Just A Book -> +4.25%
15 - Sick O' Pussies -> +4.25%
16 - Better Man -> +4.25%

The 2 Indian Style original songs are tricky, as we have no other reference to confirm their actual pitch. Based on the bass and guitar parts (and the use of riffs based on open strings for Smooth Talkin'), the pitch seems to be a bit flat, so a bit of speed increase is needed.INDIAN STYLE DEMO
17 - Smooth Talkin' -> +2.5%
18 - Time -> +2.5%
19 - Daddy Could Swear, I Declare (Gladys Knight cover) -> -2.5%
The original Daddy Could Swear song starts with a riff based on a E minor chord, so the correction (slow down) sets the cover to the correct pitch.
For the two last covers, I have sped up Something Inside So Strong to match the original key.SOLO DEMO 88-89
20 - What A Wonderful World (Sam Cooke cover) -> +3.5%
21 - Something Inside So Strong (Labi Siffre cover) -> +3.5%
By applying the same speed correction on What a Wonderful World, it appears that Vedder had adapted the original chords (verse B G#m E F#) for his register 3 steps below (chords F Dm Bb C).

Re: Eddie Vedder - Dreams in Color (the San Diego Years)
Unfortunately, most audio people (even professionals) have no idea how to properly master an old cassette. The pitch and channel alignment are supposed to be the very first thing you check, before fixing the EQ and setting the noise reduction to "stun". But more often than not, they don't even bother with it. And so it goes.XWayne wrote:By rediscovering them, I have noted that Better Man (track #16) sounded off pitch, and by checking with my guitar, it is not in regular pitch A440.

I've always loved Homeless. Would love to hear PJ record it sometime.
I see Eddie did a solo performance in 93'. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5FaWaCVh-Xg
Which song in this compilation did Eddie tag in a PJ show in recent years?
Thanks for the great compilation.

Crossroads and Homeless were pretty good (it's been years). Believe you Me and Just a Book (distant ancestor of Sad) weren't too bad either.

Yeah, those are the four tracks that have potential. I would still enjoy a re-recorded EP for just those 4 tracks. Record them with the Earthlings and all should be good!stip wrote:Crossroads and Homeless were pretty good (it's been years). I can't find "Street Funky Man" in this compilation
Previous this excellent compilation I have 2 different boots "Eds demos", "One Step Back" and "Bad Radio SDP Demos" with some songs I have up to 3 versions to compare but there isn't exact between their
Thanks a lot for the work, it sound amazing and have a new color, very impressive

Thanks! Those two boots you mention are the most spread for these songs. However not all tracks there have great quality. It still was the only source for that street fighting man cover I could find, therefore it wasn't included (also did fitsico_pata wrote:I can't find "Street Funky Man" in this compilation
