Historically yes but it’s gotten much better.

I never jerked off on a beach, but I’ve done things that in retrospect felt isolating and depraved.

I also never drank bathtub grain alcohol and confessed my darkest secrets to a trusted advisor, but that scene reminded me of past experiences too.

I’ve never ridden at motorbike at high speed across the salt flats without a helmet, but I’ve done things that made me feel similar.

Etc etc. Amazing how good this film is at using those two guys as an avatar for the viewers’ subconscious.

Do you often think about how inconsequential you are?

Don’t blink! Man some of those scenes are so good. Just wish the overall narrative were more complete, or consequential

Steve Albini wrote:Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

It would detract from the total if everything was in service of a finite punchline.
Do you feel that way about Licorice Pizza? Would you rather they just kinda meandered in the end? would that make all the scenes more potent, relatable?

Apples and oranges
I guess I just don't understand why a stronger narrative would hurt any of the scenes.

OK, makes sense. Thanks for explaining. I guess it's just not my preferred style. But as I said, despite this, I'm still often drawn to it. I've probably watched it 20 times by now.

I'm in the same boat as tree. I definitely enjoyed it, but I liked Boogie Nights more.

For some reason I'm avoiding watching The Last Duel. I think that might be next. We'll see.
