By the way, most dads take their younger kids to Pearl Jam shows simply so Ed will notice and acknowledge them (and throw them a tambourine).

Fun fact: I’m lucky if I have a beer a week. I’m mostly all scotch. Don’t tell him, but Doug was right.

If I do it’s tequila and scotch. Maybe a beer on a special occasion. Maybe drink once a week these days.

Yup. And I’ve lost 10 pounds in about a month. Crazy the amount of calories in good beer.Strat wrote:I rarely drink anymore.Chris_H_2 wrote:Ha. I dunno man, to me it actually is one of the best songs of her first album. Very few songs in her catalog rival it IMOKevin Davis wrote:Wow, if this is one of her weaker songs, I'm in for a treat.
But I definitely think you'll enjoy her songs, more the second album than the first. I think you'll find a lot to latch on to in songs like "Billie Bossa Nova" and "Your Power". She's legit

The BE track was alright. I wish I hadn't seen the clip as it turned me off the whole thing. I've seen a few of her clips and it all seems to be the same, no?
I think I'll check more of her stuff out one day.

Van Etten’s stuff has an edge to it.Chris_H_2 wrote:and you called Billie Eilish boring?spike wrote:Strat wrote:No diss to Billie Eilish here because she's very talented and everyone i respect loves the hell out of her.
She just hasn't clicked for me.
I think Sharon Van Etten is reasonably similar but way more my style.

What kind of edge though? From what I know of Sharon Van Etten's stuff it's pretty musically conservative, kind of plain. Billie's a pop performer but I feel she's operating at a different level of adventurousness

#97: Billie Eilish - When the Party's Over
I've never quite "gotten" the Billie Eilish phenom, but I can certainly appreciate this is quite a step up from the songs before as far as song craft goes.
I like how she sounds on this, and particularly like the heavy low bass rumble going on at various points in the song. I was expecting this to go somewhere further, to build and release, but that never occurred. Interesting that a song that kinda slowly steps along with no real pay off as such is in this top 100. Not bagging the song for it, I'm just surprised its popular enough to be here without more bells and whistles.
In the end though, like I suspect I will be able to say for an enormous percentage of this countdown, its not really my cup of tea.
<EDIT> Pretty sure this song was number 5 on the JJJ Hottest 100 last year (Australia's largest annual song countdown as voted by the generally young and hip demographic of JJJ radio). I remember listening to it at the time and being totally underwhelmed. Not that it was a bad song, I actually quite enjoy it and certainly appreciate it as a lovely piece of music, just that it was a little yawney given the nature of that countdown.
I've also decided that I am not going to watch any of the videos as I do this. Far better just listening to these for mine.

Re: Let's Actually Listen to Spotify's Top 100 Songs
Tramp is a good SVE album; the next one was pretty solid too, though a bit less so IMO, and I haven't kept up since then.
There definitely is a sort of earthy plainness to her music that is at once a strength and a limitation. She's kind of like Angel Olsen in that, when she lands on the right combination of melody, emotion, and atmosphere, she can be extremely moving, but when she doesn't hit the bullseye the songwriting alone is pretty hit or miss.
Definitely doesn't scratch the same itch for me as this Eilish tune though, which feels almost operatic by comparison.

Remind me tomorrow is her best. And slightly different. Comeback kid and seventeen are top notch songs. Incredible voice.
