Really though, I might just never understand why a band gets traction anymore. I don’t need my music to be super serious or anything like that - there’s just something I can’t quite get into with this. I am sure I will give it another try at some point, but sometimes
I am convinced that there’s this random herd mentality where everyone gravitates to one group for no particular reason and that peer pressure informs everyone else’s thoughts on it because they figure they must be missing something if everyone is loving them.

Really though, I might just never understand why a band gets traction anymore. I don’t need my music to be super serious or anything like that - there’s just something I can’t quite get into with this. I am sure I will give it another try at some point, but sometimes

I personally don't do herd mentality when it comes to music and what I enjoy, although I take your point. There certainly always seem to be some current "darlings of the scene" at any point in time.

I actually really enjoyed Wet Leg's first 3 singles but I find with groups like this my replay value is small. I love what I first hear, play it over for a few months and then often sort of forget about them until they come up randomly on a playlist down the years and I think "Oh yeah! Cool song."

Dry Cleaning were like this for me last year also. Got right into their album for a few weeks and now just don't play it at all anymore.

I admit this phenomenon is partly because there's always new stuff to check out, but also the wiffey's total annoyance at both bands also comes into play. I do try to consider her tastes when we sit down for after work drinks.

I just think certain bands' styles perhaps have less repeat value for me. These 'quirkier' type bands seem to have a shorter shelf life in my experience.

OK, I said all that up there but I've actually finally listened to this whole Wet Leg album and they've surprised me a bit. I've already said that I really liked the 3 singles they released, but the rest of this album is definitely more than just filler. Some interesting stuff here.

I am however particularly pleasantly surprised they had a song like this in them:

One song in to this new Destroyer album. If the whole vibe is like this, instrumental with a few sparse words, it will be very interesting and enjoyable. I do enjoy his singing and lyrics, but sometimes his albums can require a bit of heavy lifting for me to fully absorb.

I’ve said this before, but I naturally have the reverse impulse when a band gets suddenly huge for no particular reason, and I am trying to temper that when listening, and I should give it one more listen…but admittedly this fall nowhere near my wheelhouse because I am drawn to artists that don’t resemble their aesthetic- at least from the about half album I heard. I’ll give it one more chance and report back.
