I’m pretty far. Just beat Niall. Game keeps getting harder but trying to stick with it.

It might have to do with where I am. Further in the game, the guys you kill give you a lot more runes so you can level up, plus I take advantage of the golden runes and lord runes to level up whenever I can. Those are huge.

I was stuck in the 90’s for a while then I beat Rykard, who was annoying as shit, and went on a rampage to kill some big dragons who give you a ton of runes when you kill them.

That's good to know. I think I had been hanging out in lower levels for too long exploring so I wasn't getting enough runes to level frequently.

There’s an early game rune farming spot in Dragonbarrow, which is North Caelid, but beyond that I couldn't find any spots to cheese.

I will say…
Spoiler: show
the underground areas are great because the enemies down there are typically worth more runes

That dragonbarrow spot is great - especially with the golden scarab talisman equipped.

I hit up that farming spot everytime I have a bunch of runes, but not quite enough to level up. It's an easy way to get what I need. I'm level 55 in 20 hours of playtime.

Just found out you can upgrade your Spirit Ashes from a random Youtube thumbnail. I'm all about mystery and world building in games, but why do this genre make these valuable systems so opaque?

The entire philosophy of the game is for you to just figure shit out on your own. That definitely adds to the experience for me. I think so many people complain about this because they're used to games holding their hands .

Stumble across an NPC, have a mysterious conversation, find a random item hidden on a rooftop, go back to the NPC, go to another location, go back to the NPC... That's being complicated just to be complicated.

This game takes the philosophy to an extreme. The developers need to respect the player's time as much as well as their intelligence to figure things out.

I like that there is a game like this that makes such bold choices. If you don't have time, don't play it.

Careful, you're turning into one of those "soulsborne fans".

I'm not a sycophant. I just am really getting tired of games telling me what to do all the time. It's like, why even play it at all? This is exactly the kind of game I needed. I understand why it's frustrating to you, but I like it.

I also like the feeling that when I accomplish or discover something that it may a completely unique experience, and some people may never have found this, at least in this way.

Yeah I love that it doesn’t hold your hand at all. When you discover something, it feels incredible. I was playing Far Cry 6 before this and the shit on your map is so annoying and overwhelming. I was watching a friend play Horizon: Forbidden West and he was trying to solve a puzzle, and the main character basically told him where to look if it was taking too long. I hate that.

There are certainly things I looked up that felt important, but for the most part, it’s just been exploring and stumbling into stuff.
