Yeah the troll bits or whatever were fun, but they felt more like a pirates of the Caribbean movie than a lotr movie.

I wasn't really saying anything with it. It just "felt" right, as a response.stip wrote:you know, some of that stuff didn't bother me because tonally the hobbit is a far lighter book than LOTR.
Definitely.they felt more like a Pirates of the Caribbean movie than a lotr movie.

PotC seems to fit the tone of a Hobbit movie more than LotR, IMO.stupidmop wrote:Yeah the troll bits or whatever were fun, but they felt more like a pirates of the Caribbean movie than a lotr movie.

Yup, that was awful.McParadigm wrote:The whole scene where Jar Jar rides his rabbit sleigh in a purposeless circle around the heroes, who never quite figure out what to do about that incredibly vexing scenario, and then it turns out they were like fifteen feet from the Elven city the whole time and all they had to do was crawl in this cave which turns out not to be a cave but sort of a cliff face but you couldn't see that from above so that's kind of weird.
That was pretty much Phantom Menace level for me.

I'm sorry. Though if it makes you feel any better i'm really looking forward to the unleaked songs, and i really like the parts of the hobbit with gollum in it?
I'll not take any shit on this.
They depicted Riddles in the dark, perfectly.
I'm hoping they put the whole thing in the extended edition. Rumour has it it will be included.

A great read in relation to our earlier chat about the war and its effect on Tolkien

Re: Film: The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013)
The the first one is on HBO this month so I DVR'd it and watched it in two hour and half segments. I was pretty surprised how much I liked it. I've been avoiding it just to save myself the headache but it was pretty enjoyable. The changes from the book didn't bother me as much as the LOTR ones did. Most of them made sense when adapting for the screen. The combining of Azog and Bolg characters for instance. Even silly old Radagast with his bunnies wasn't so bad despite the bad CGI effects with the sled. Some missed opportunities. Why not tease the Balrog at Moria or give Gloin a larger role since he's Gimli's dad? I don't even know which one was Gloin. I have to admit I was kinda hoping for a Aragorn mention at Rivendell. Even if they didn't show him just something like a reference to a Dunadan. Not giving the Eagles speaking roles was odd as was having the spiders attack Radgast during the day. Dumb stuff like Orcrist should glow. Anyways I was glad I watched it. If I wasn't so apprehensive about Legolas and Kate I'd be more excited for the next one.

Considering I'm such a massive fan of the book, it's kind of shameful I've not even felt the inclination to see any of these movies. I probably need to get over that.

Stip
I can't say as I haven't seen it. If you google bilbo talking to elrond extra features, you'll see what is probably the best part of the extras. It's in YouTube or at least out there.
It is actually a lovely conversation, true to the books and sets up bilbo running from the suite later. As to the rest, I can't speak for it.

They're really pushing the epic drama-adventure element...now more than ever. I wonder if there'll still be all those silly asides, or if they're going to lean away from that now.
That first movie was a great example of "extremely intense" and "extremely silly" getting mashed together, and just sort of injuring each other's impact as a result.

Did you guys see the production video to go with this?
Also 20 minutes of the film were shown yesterday to fans in cinemas around the world.
4 or 5 completed scenes. Theonering.net has all the details and spoiler is the word of the day.
I read it. Sounds like they've made huge departures from the story and massive elaborations/madey uppy bits.
Still. Trailer looks exciting.
