How is obi wan able to tell Luke Vader is more machine now than man? Cos he chopped off all his limbs this time and found out

Take that with a mountain of salt. I’d be waiting to see this before forming an opinion on that but like with anything I’d say they’ve made this self contained with no threads dangling but possibly the door open enough to come back again if they need to.

This all depends on how they end the first season, I guess. If they take it right up to the time of ANH, then there won't be much room for another season.

This all depends on how they end the first season, I guess. If they take it right up to the time of ANH, then there won't be much room for another season.

They have years and years of room left to play in.
It’s 6 episodes. There won’t be a ‘five years later’ story jump in here in this season

In terms of progressing and expanding upon the story and themes of their relationship. Why does it need to happen? What does it need to accomplish?

Having not seen the show, obviously, I imagine we start with an Obi-Wan who is lost and despondent. He feels like a failure. He failed to save his friend/spiritual brother Anakin. And at the same time he failed to destroy Darth Vader. It's got to be part of what's eating away at him.

Having the chance to face Anakin/Vader again, to finally succeed is going to be a huge motivation. It's also going to inform HOW they interact.

Their fight in Sith is vicious, violent, and volatile. It's all passion. It's a war for the soul.

Their fight in Hope is measured. It's a chess match. Obi-Wan approaches it, not form a position of wanting to (or even knowing he can) defeat Vader but from a tactical position. He's mostly trying to buy Luke time. He knows he can't defeat him. And he certainly knows there's no turning him (which is a departure from how he used to feel). He also knows that he can become one with the Force. The goal is very different than before.

I expect this fight to give us clues/explorations of: 1) Vader's "Obi-Wan once thought as you did" line, 2) Vader's "You should not have come back" line, 3) Why/how Obi-Wan is so certain he can't defeat Vader. 4) How Obi-Wan goes from being despondent to being focused and certain, to believing Luke is the chosen one.

This new fight should provide insight (if not full answers; I don't expect that) into all of that stuff. We should see each character a very different points in their respective journeys. It's all about the motivations, the HOW/WHY of the fight.

When Obi-Wan takes down Maul in Rebels, it's one of the greatest lightsaber fights in all of Star Wars and it's like three moves. Because only Obi-Wan at that point in his life, having gone through everything else, could have fought that particular fight that particular way. I think the same is true of his two fights (so far) with Vader. I expect this next one to be no different.

Most importantly, Obi-Wan needs it, I think. He needs it to overcome his doubt and fear. At least, that's one way to imagine this playing out. The story could be very different. Obviously, I'm making a lot of guesses as to what this will be about thematically. But all of this rambling provides some reasons why it could work and why it would be important to see them fight again.

They broke this down on Force Center and it was an interesting conversation. It's all about context. We, for example, don't even know what "cameo" means to him. Could be characters in the story. Could be actors. Could be a lot of things.
